Very, very little had to be altered due to her death. The filmmakers did not have to use body doubles or eliminate any major scenes.

I was thinking about Douglas Trumbull’s Showscan films the other day. I wish there was some kind of way to give them a wide release, but it’s probably just not feasible

I wonder if Forsyth's original cut of Being Human still exists, languishing somewhere in the Warner vaults

I truly hope so. Even just releasing it in HD with the narration removed would improve it tremendously.

Because of the recent LAPD hint guessing game, the one that immediately comes to my mind is Cobra (1986), with its long history of rough cut and director's cut, presumably over 30 minutes longer than the theatrical cut.

Could the title James hinted at be The Devils?

Probably not since the BFI’s release is still in print and I’m sure what a new documentary on The Devils would add that wasn’t already mentioned in the 2002 documentary Hell on Earth.

Since WB rejected Criterion's huge offer a few years ago, one would assume, if they had a change of heart and decided to let it out, they'd offer it to Criterion first. Plus I'm not sure Arrow would be willing to lose money on a release by over paying for the license, like Criterion reportedly was.

I’m thinking it could be De Palma’s The Black Dahlia or Ferrara’s Body Snatchers. Both were ruthlessly reedited

I also feel like they would be making a much bigger deal of getting the rights to The Devil

If it was The Devils, I'd actually tread more carefully until it's announced all the more so because Warner is so damn sensitive about this thing. When James said he was at the BFI library for research, I immediately thought it might be a British film (though I'm sure the library covers all and not just UK cinema). What seems to go against The Devils (aside from the BFI DVD still being in print as TA pointed out) is the suggestion that the film in question was heavily re-edited like Game of Death. The UK theatrical release of The Devils was at least quantitively "only" cut by a few minutes for a running time of 111 minutes compared to the 117 minutes of the "Director's Cut" (reinstating the rape of Christ sequence).

I also wonder if it really turns out to be The Devils, whether Warner stipulates that it can only be released and sold in the UK.

Gangster Squad: The Fleischer Cut

Would any label touch Twilight Zone: The Movie? Can’t see WB licensing it out until Landis is gone—just finished Stephen Farber’s Outrageous Conduct, so it’s been on my mind.

This is exactly what someone releasing the Devils would say to misdirect us!

Such a great book. Farber used to host screenings and Q & A’s of new films through UCLA, and I saw him not too long ago when he programmed a double bill of Ride the High Country and War Hunt (1962). It really does an exemplary job of explaining why so many people shielded John Landis and enabled his career to thrive while the D. A.’s office spectacularly fucked up their case against him. Dan Aykroyd calling the 3 deaths an “industrial accident” still makes my blood boil.

WB's legal would never approve special features that got into that situation.

who even holds the rights to that now? did Disney gobble them up? that'd be a hell of a release, if such a special feature was allowed on there

It will never happen. A DCP preservation of what the project looked like in 1992 was made by the AMPAS, but even that cannot get a commercial release (it’s only screened at Academy venues and the MOMA). Roy E. Disney tried to see if it would be feasible to complete it as intended, and there is too much red tape, and Robert Williams never would’ve agreed to work on it again.

I would be surprised if we got some form of the theatrical version on Blu-Ray, inside or outside the US. (I'm going to assume that the movie is no longer in the hands of Miramax, and that it could be one of those films that whoever owns the rights probably doesn't even know they do).

Arrow teased The Gift on Facebook. Apparently that was a collaboration with Shout.
