So the newer standalone releases will contain material not in the box set?
I expect the newer material will booklets (new essays, reprinted articles), while the actual discs remain identical.Lowry_Sam wrote: Mon Oct 05, 2026 4:02 pm So the newer standalone releases will contain material not in the box set?
Lolita, as well as 4K upgrades of The Killing/Killer's Kiss and Paths of Glory are certainties (I would expect Lolita and POG to be sometime in 2027). Good chance with 2001 and The Shining. Doubtful they do the rest, even Dr Strangelove, unless the Sony 4K goes out of print (it has the same on disc extras as the Criterion Blu, so it's an upgrade only for packaging and swag). Zero chance with Fear and Desire, obviously.Finch wrote: Mon Oct 05, 2026 4:33 pm Lolita is going to get one at a minimum, but is every single film going to be reissued as a standalone? Hopefully they'll clarify that sooner than later. I'm not in a rush for the box set but now I'm left wondering whether I should have bothered selling off my MoC Paths of Glory and the earlier CC Barry Lyndon.
Anyone here going? And if so, send details. Honestly, if I was going, I would have dressed up as Dr. Strangelove.Few filmmakers have had as great an impact on how we see cinema as Stanley Kubrick. On October 29, Criterion and TCM are celebrating his legacy with a night of conversation and costume at Nine Orchard in New York City. Tickets are on sale now.
Doors open at 6 p.m. for the full evening, with a drink waiting for you along with passed hors d’oeuvres, followed by a conversation you won’t hear anywhere else. End the night with entry to the FIDELIO rooftop party. The panel features
Matthew Modine (star of Full Metal Jacket)
Vincent D’Onofrio (star of Full Metal Jacket)
Katharina Kubrick (artist and Stanley’s daughter)
Lisa Leone (second-unit director on Eyes Wide Shut)
Josh Safdie (director of Marty Supreme and Uncut Gems
If you can’t make the panel, join us on the roof at 9 p.m. for FIDELIO, a come-as-your-favorite-Kubrick-character costume party.
they've never done that for Bergman or Fellini, and even Fellini had redesigned covers for 8 1/2 and La StradaLowry_Sam wrote: Mon Oct 05, 2026 4:59 pm All the Kubrick titles on the channel now all use the box set style artwork, so perhaps there will also be a change to the artwork once existing titles sell out.
Why do you say there’s “little reason” for ACO and FMJ to get individual releases, aside from Warner simply not wanting to relinquish the standalone rights to those two?ryannichols7 wrote: Thu Oct 08, 2026 9:48 pmthey've never done that for Bergman or Fellini, and even Fellini had redesigned covers for 8 1/2 and La StradaLowry_Sam wrote: Mon Oct 05, 2026 4:59 pm All the Kubrick titles on the channel now all use the box set style artwork, so perhaps there will also be a change to the artwork once existing titles sell out.
I suspect Lolita, 2001, The Shining will be "new spine" individuals and upgrades of The Killing, Paths of Glory, and hopefully Spartacus (I wanna own the OG cover cover, sorry) happen. there's little reason for A Clockwork Orange or Full Metal Jacket to get individuals it seems
Finally, I understand how these discs insert!greggster59 wrote: Sat Oct 10, 2026 4:26 pm Unboxing The Complete Kubrick | Criterion 4K Box Set

I’m going. Gonna do the cloak and Venetian mask…because I already own the mask. I’ll report back and try to upload pics if I can figure that out…HardNight'sDay wrote: Thu Oct 08, 2026 5:09 pmAnyone here going? And if so, send details. Not even the biggest fan, I just like spending money on stupid shit.
Always in November. I suspect there will be a Criterion flash sale between release and Nov. 1.kekid wrote: Sun Oct 11, 2026 11:04 pm When is the Barnes and Noble November sale expected to open for "Complete Kubrick?"
If there is a high demand for this set through B&N, is it better to order it online or pick it up in store?
Just don't tell us if anyone goes as Clare Quilty from Lolita.HardNight'sDay wrote: Sun Oct 11, 2026 4:22 pmGodspeed, bearcuborg.bearcuborg wrote: Sun Oct 11, 2026 2:57 amI’m going. We’d have hoped for something a little more radical, like raw scans and then added filmic curves and color timing from reference prints. But perhaps the original masters were pretty good in their own right, maybe that’s why Criterion didn’t alter as much.nicolas wrote: Mon Oct 12, 2026 12:48 pm The Complete Kubrick (Criterion) - caps for Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon (same disc), Eyes Wide Shut (same disc). Will update once more comparisons are up. The Warner masters are identical, just better encoded without the filtering.
I would agree, but depending on the frame, you really truly can see a more consistently resolved grain structure. Sincerely doubt any of this is visible in motion, and I would NOT rebuy if I owned the original, but I appreciate that they squeezed just a little more juice from it to satisfy the obsessives. Looks great.tenia wrote: Mon Oct 12, 2026 12:53 pm 2001's encodes look so close to each other, one could think they're actually identical.
The Warner masters definitely aren’t bad but they would’ve had room for improvement especially in the case of 2001 with its raised black levels and occasional DNR, both of which are apparently the result of Christopher Nolan’s input. I’d also argue that the color grades of 2001, Clockwork, Shining and Full Metal Jacket should’ve been a bit more film-like than they are now, similar to Barry Lyndon, which is perfect.
