I messed around with the thumbnail in photoshop, and It looks to me like they went with the best option. they've gotta save red for an Italian anyways.

They will run out of the main primary colors pretty quick.
Around set 10 or 12 the colors are going to start getting pretty unusual. Maybe by set 25 the color mix might even be as a bizarre as a typical Kino dvd cover. #-o

but Italian films are full of Passion, and there ain't no other color for passion but Red.

If they do a country themed boxset I'd imagine they'd go with flag colors.

Sorry guys, I don't know if this has been mentioned earlier, but I was wondering if the new Third Man edition is going to be digipak, like for example, Bicycle Thieves, or Amarcord. Does anyone know?

I sure hope not. I think the whole digipack thing was very ill conceived.

All multi-disc sets have come in digipacks for several months now.

I didn't know that. I don't get access to Criterion that often. But every time I visit the US, I try to come back with as many Criterion releases as possible.

With the exception of Hands Over the City, 49th Parallel, and Monsters and Madmen, and not to forget Young Mr. Lincoln. But I expect The Third Man will be in a digipak.

Yowza. I stand corrected. Young Mr. Lincoln has been out for a while. I have that one, and knew it was in the double keepcase. I guess it has been too long since I've bought a Criterion disc. I just assumed that single films comprised of two or more discs had all been in digipacks since the great re-release wave of 2006 (Seven Samurai, Playtime, Amarcord). Yes, I know what assuming does. Yes, I am an ass.

I'll third that. The digipaks are simply beautiful.

I am currently working on a project that has me searching for really spectacular DVD menu art and layout. I have found that most of the really interesting examples come from the Criterion Collection. This got me thinking that there should be a board on here where people could discuss, not just the cover art but the actual menus themselves. Granted, I have not seen every Criterion disc, but based on what I've seen lately, I'd have to say that The Double Life of Veronique and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas rank pretty high on the list of most interesting. I'm interested to see what other titles people think are good.

Videodrome was a pretty good menu. It worked well with the packaging and the context of the movie. The content does make me want to get the movie started, since I can only take so many repeated torture scenes/screams.

The Wes Anderson menus are worth mentioning too.

Not from Criterion, but the bfi's 2-disc of the Brothers Quay Short Films has some of the most beautiful packaging and menus I ever came across.

Yes, the menus in the BFI Quay discs are indeed exquisite.

Gate of Flesh also has some of the most beautiful and complex menus Criterion has ever designed...

That's the one. When I saw this thread topic I immediately thought of these (but couldn't remember whether they were for this or Story of a Prostitute): an entire array of related, dreamy animated menus that come up semi-randomly. It's worth flicking aimlessly back and forth through the menu screens just to try and see all the permutations.

Now that I've got The Burmese Harp in my hands, I've noticed that you can just see the Buddha staute showing through the smoke. A nice touch!
