Bob Furmanek's research shows that during the period, 1.75:1 was the dominant widescreen shooting AR in the UK, with safe areas for both 1.66:1 and 1.85:1. It's pure myth that 1.66:1 was a de facto AR in the UK, but that hasn't stopped a raft of masters being produced so.

The thought of AHDN from Criterion is so exciting. I'm hopeful the supplements would be exhaustive and include plenty of stuff like this.

The Maysles brothers shot a lot of footage of them at JFK Airport as well as around NYC that weekend. They weren't allowed in to film the Ed Sullivan Show, but instead filmed people watching the show on television. Given Criterion's relationship to them, and if the Maysles hold the rights to that footage, that would be an enormous bonus. Hell, you could probably make a documentary out of that footage alone, perhaps interspersed with thoughts by Albert and other people who were there.

The First US Visit has the Ed Sullivan footage spliced in and some of the Maysles stuff cut. I wouldn't be surprised to see the original Maysles cut resurrected by Criterion, both out of loyalty to Albert and to avoid paying for the Ed Sullivan rights.

It would seem a really wasted opportunity for A Hard Day's Night not to be released in either July or August to correspond with the 50th anniversary of its theatrical release in the UK or US. I wouldn't be surprised to see this coupled with a relatively unprecedented marketing push.

I hate to admit, I am probably one of the very few who is lukewarm on A Hard Day's Night, although I do realize this film to be classic and love the fact that Richard Lester is in the Collection. However I keep hoping the next batch of announcements is Scanners. I am even trying to imagine what Criterion has in store for us in regard to the packaging. I recently revisited Scanners, for maybe the first time since 2001 or so, and was really blown away. There were elements of it that reminded me of William Gibson's Sprawl Trilogy. Anyways, I am so pumped on Scanners its virtually all I can think about for next month.

I am also hoping that at any moment we get the shocker of the year with the announcement of a David Lynch film. Any Lynch film.

Only if Criterion's edition of Limelight comes out in 2029. There's no way the Chaplin estate are going to sabotage their Major Publishing Event by giving away the book they're sending out press releases about with a DVD.

I could imagine getting at least a small excerpt with it, though. That would probably work beneficially for both parties, promoting the full version of the novella and adding a unique supplement to the DVD if it comes out prior to publication
