If Ali missed out it would be one of the biggest snubs in Oscar history and a politically inexpedient blunder. Let me put it this way: I am as sure of Ali's nomination as I am of La La Land being nominated for Best Picture

I won't do the whole thing because pretty much every major category is upin the air after the top three:

Arrival
Hacksaw Ridge
La La Land
Lion
Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight

And that's it.

I read an interesting article about the expanse to a sliding ten nominations wherein it was revealed that the Academy actually tested this for years back before announcing the change to see what the results would be (in years where there were still only five nominations) and in no year were there ever ten nominations when there was the sliding noms. In fact, most years ended up being between five and seven, so I guess it's possible for those days to come back again!

I don't know if I'll go so far as to predict it, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a band of Scorsese acolytes in the Academy that was just big enough to get it in there.

At any rate, I liked those couple of years with 10 nominations. The more the merrier, I say.

Why the desire not to see Fences, Dom?

Never a fan of the play and what I've seen of Washington's perf makes it look tiresome to sit thru at-length

I don't know much about it so I was just curious. I can't say I've had the desire to rush to the theater, either, from what I've seen. Just looks so stage-y.

Fences isn't so much stagebound as it is poor blocked cinematically. So much of the play is about the drama happening between different pairs of characters and it would help tremendously to have the key players in frame together. Instead Washington mostly plays out the film in shot/reverse shot with Washington getting the lion's share of screentime because his character is the loudmouth. The problem with that is that the story totally loses focus on characters like the wife or son who have the actual arcs in the story and ideally I think their silence says means as much as Washington's monologues.

Nic Cage for Worst Supporting Actor? I liked him in Snowden. Is there some kind of rule that he has to get one of these every year or what?

Cage has definitely entered that Sly Stallone/Pauly Shore phase with the Razzies where he'll get dumped on regardless of whether the role warrants it or not.

It's just weird because his Snowden role is so low-key and ... well, un-Cagelike. I've never been a fan of his, but still I was relieved to see him do something grounded and engaging for the first time in what seems like a decade or more.

Anyway, the Razzies are stupid and I'm against them.

Pauly Shore, never getting credit for his good roles.

I'm not going to make a set of predictions but this feels like the year when the sequel to Crash got tommy Lee Jones a nomination out of a totally forgotten awards movie, so I expect Sully or Hail Caesar to overperform in at least one major category

I wouldn't say it's that so much. It's not actually a voting board with the Academy. For the acting categories it's a couple of thousand actors voting in private and only each individual's number one choice that can get nominated. The last couple of years it's struck me that the way to avoid the regular voting controversy would be for them to change the voting system. Make each ballot determined by points, 5 for a number one choice down to one point for a number five. That way at least the nominees are a truer reflection of what the voting body felt were the five best performances of the year. Although it'll probably hurt the odd little passion nominations where someone sweeps just enough number one votes to get in.

I'm going to ignore that business and express my extreme pleasure at Ruth Negga, Isabelle Huppert, and Michael Shannon getting acting Oscar noms.

In other news... nine noms for Best Picture, including Fences. Amy Adams turns out to be this year's big snub. Gibson is welcomed back in to Hollywood. La La Land indeed ties the Oscar record with 14 noms

How can Amy Addams get snubbed. Arrival worked as well as it did solely because of her. This feels like a rather weak Best Picture group of nominees to be honest. At least the Foreign and Animated nominees are all fine. But seriously, Addams gets snubbed?

Amy Adams was definitely snubbed, but Negga's performance was the strongest part of a very good film. Adams will have a million more opportunities. Love that Michael Shannon nomination, only wish Jake Gyllenhaal could've snuck in.

Also, Passengers for best score over Arrival?

For those who like to do this from the comfort of their home, the following Best Pic noms are/will be out on Blu-Ray before the ceremony: Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, and Manchester by the Sea. Moonlight follows A24's inexplicable Room release schedule and comes out two days after the ceremony

They could put it on demand/streaming a week or two early the way they did with that film, though. And I'm sure its theatrical run will still be going strong. Both aren't ideal options if you're looking for a disc but at least it'll be available to see.

Why is it Negga vs Addams though? Haven't seen Loving, Foster Jenkins or Jackie, but Hubert and Addams were the two best performances I saw. I liked Stone enough and the Academy loves La La Land so it was a lock. Is Streep that good? I'm kind of tired of her getting nominated for over acting and getting nominated almost every year
