I have this up in my bedroom and sometimes just find myself staring at it for minutes at a time. It is so cool.

House appears to have changed links again/changed back to red? I can't even tell anymore. It looks identical to the "original" one Jeff posted earlier, except that the release year has been corrected.

That Magician cover is incredible...one of the top ten best in the entire collection. Just phenomenal. Will be getting it and Hausu day and date!

Still have my old MGM Paths of Glory disc....not sure i'll bother with that.

Brilliant covers for The Magician and House. Really looking forward to the blu-ray release of House, wondering to see what that`s going to look like after the MoC dvd already looked so amazing.

Oh Criterion, why do you tease me so? The cover I was most anticipating last month was The Thin Red Line, and it took them nearly a month to reveal it. Now they make me wait to see my next most anticipated one, Paths of Glory. #-o

I guess I will just have to console myself by staring at the FANTASTIC covers for House and The Magician.

eh, who am I kidding on Paths of Glory....of course I'm going to upgrade no matter what the cover is. bastards. They are really outdoing themselves this year. month after month is just full of sublime beauty.

This year so far has been pure Blugasm. I like The Magician cover.

This is what was in the press releases. They made a note on Darjeeling that the "Cover art is not final". I actually really like them both and hope they're leaning towards them.

Oh man, and the tide changes immediately. Two of the worst covers I've ever seen from Criterion

Really? I guess I can see someone feeling that way about Paths (which I'm sure will drastically change,) but I still like the Darjeeling one.

Paths looks cluttered, but provisional; I'm guessing there will be some revisions. I actually like the Darjeeling cover. Reminds me of a pastel, cartoony Malevich:



With trains for horses, of course.

I like the Darjeeling one too. If they go with that I'd be content.

But Paths is a mess. I can't imagine them going with that. The wire next to the Y in "Glory" looks like a question mark at first glance, making the title look like "Paths of Glory?" As if it was designed by ... Ron Burgundy?

Darjeeling looks boring beyond belief and somewhat resembles those split screen covers Criterion was punishing us with for a bit. Paths of Glory just looks like amateur hour MSPaint-aided cover art

I'm sure that both of those are just temp filler, and that the final art will bear little resemblance to it. Criterion puts mock-up work, unfinished art, and rejected ideas on the sell sheets that they send to retailers because "box art coming soon" isn't good for business. Eric Skillman once commented that his first job at Criterion was making temp art for the sell sheets.

Obviously Eric Anderson drew the Darjeeling pic, but it looks unfinished and may not even be part of the cover. Wouldn't be surprised to see it on the booklet.

Paths of Glory is the epitome of temp art. Obviously, Skillman is saving it for last so he can pour hours and hours of love into what will be his first Kubrick cover. When the time comes, it will be too beautiful to stare directly at.

The Darjeeling one is fine. I'm surprised at Dom's negative reaction. Didn't you hate this movie?

Paths makes it look like a prison escape movie, with a weirdly faux-Russian font on top of it. It definitely wouldn't stop me buying the movie, but I feel like a Kubrick movie has such a wealth of images that to go for one that imo isn't striking at all almost seems perverse.

I kind of like the minimalism of the Darjeeling one, though.

Yeah, why the Russian font? The two iconic images in the film, to me, are Kirk Douglas walking through the trenches (one of the earliest examples of the Kubrick head-on tracking shot) and the attempted attack on the Anthill (including the shot of Douglas throwing his hand in the air and blowing his whistle and freaking out). Yeah, any of those would be better than this Tarkovsky-esque image.

Paths of Glory is awful, hopefully they will change it.
Something grand and not so zoomed in and close up, the huge clunky font is bad too.

Darjeeling cover is nice and relaxed and quite well suited to the tone of the film.

yeah, the Darjeeling is actually refreshingly understated...about perfect really considering I expected it to be busy as can be. It's nice.

Paths of Glory looks like something SwimmingHorses did. awful. really really awful. That can't be real.
