I can't imagine them not announcing the Godzilla set at the Toho panel. If they do, however, I also don't understand why they're waiting to announce #1000 until next week.

Well it has to be some boxset then right? I can’t see them hyping up #1000 and announcing separately just an individual film like Citizen Kane or The Grand Budapest Hotel.

And the other most likely sets are WKW or Fellini but those aren’t coming until next year more likely. I guess the Kurosawa is likely too but if Dersu Uzula isn’t even restored yet then I cant see it.

We have plenty of evidence now that it's Godzilla, maybe the announcement of the set (and maybe the outer cover) will be followed up with more details and packaging photos next week. Seems like the likeliest explanation for the additional delay.

Most indeed. Also possible that the delay was due to something big that ended up not getting announced this month due to some issue or another not getting worked out (aside from the Godzilla set, I mean).

I saw idle speculation elsewhere that maybe the new site wasn't built to handle 4-digit spine numbers, which seems just absurd enough to be true.

If they have been waiting to announce the Godzilla boxset during the Toho CC thing, which is tomorrow, while they say the #1000 won’t be announced until next week then doesn’t that mean #1000 must be something else than the Gojira galore?

As with the Olympic Box set (if memory serves me well) they announced it ahead of time, but gave it spine 900 before they had officially reached that number. What if the Godzilla set is announced with an arbitrary spine number that isn't 1000 (like 1001)?

I'm happy for the Sternberg, and Haxan should be good. But that's two (or four) upgrades, and then a documentary and a film I don't like at all. Just seems meh compared to the last few months. It will be more so if Godzilla is announced as the 1000th spine. But oh well we got the Koker trilogy I can't ask for much more

That would be my guess. They also haven't been giving spine numbers to these massive sets either (is that correct?).

I'm sure the main reasons the Kurosawa and Bergman sets don't have spine numbers is because they'd have to include the spine numbers for all the past, individual releases, so Bergman would be something ridiculous like #11, 60, 71, 101, 139, 208-211, 229, 237, 261-264, 321, 412, 537, 613-614, 701 and then whatever spine number they give the box and/or the rest of the titles.

Then again, never put it past Criterion to be completely and willfully inconsistent. This is the same company where some smaller box sets have a spine number for the box itself and others don't.

Olympics set got a spine despite the fact that Tokyo Olympiad already had one, so no different from Godzilla

What else could it possibly be though that would warrant a release so different from the already announced October releases that it needs to be announced separately? I can’t imagine a re-release of Citizen Kane or The Grand Budapest Hotel needs its own announcement.

Most likely, Toho teases / announces the set tomorrow with Criterion officially posting all the specs next week on Monday / Tuesday.

The thread to speculate on the 1000th spine is locked but users are speculating about what the 1000th spine will be, most of the announcements for this month have already been made but users are speculating about what announcements could be coming, the Godzilla set has all but been confirmed but users are debating the merits of a Godzilla set, the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America’s Cup, France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, Germany doesn’t want to go to war, and the three most powerful men in America are named Bush, Dick, and Colon. Need I say more?
