The contrast between “please don’t be indifferent to our pain” and “we’d like to thank Netflix” was...something.

Just based off of those short clips, the Tunisian movie looked like the most interesting one.
I got to see that one in theaters with a very responsive audience. It reminded me of a South Korean film in its mixture of different genres and elements, as well as its humor. It's flawed, but I had a ton of fun

Speaking of short clips, is it weird that the Academy has largely eschewed clips of the nominated films? It seems like they've been getting shorter over the years and now they're gone all the way, with movie stars reading press kit excepts instead.
I dunno, especially in a year when people haven't been able to go to the movies and are largely unfamiliar with the movies, it seems like it would be worthwhile.

These informational idiosyncrasies about all the nominees from each host is getting to be a bit much. Like, no, you don't know each other intimately

This has bothered me for a while, I love when they show a clip from the four actors nominated and I thought they'd been doing a better job the last few years (after shortening or omitting them completely sometime last decade). Sad to see it cut again.

Jesus, Pete Docter thanking the cast of Soul before the 100's of animators on it is just astoundingly infuriating.
I knew the Animated Short/Feature pics would be the safest, most predictable ones, but it always stings just a bit.

I think Soderbergh was aiming for “cool” and “intimate” with this whole ceremony, and it’s just not working at all. Bong’s segment was the only one that I felt pulled it off.

I was hoping that
Soul and
Onward would cancel each other out, but alas, no. The whole category has mostly been a shitshow from the start

Why do they have an interpreter speaking for Marlee Matlin? I know she's deaf, but she can speak.

When I was a kid, those clips were my favorite parts of the show, precisely because I hadn't seen many of the movies. The cynic in me wonders if this crop of nominees are films that the Academy would rather not advertise, but maybe I guess they're probably just trying to keep with the "small intimate ceremony" theme.

"South Central neighborhood"? Do they not realize that the area has been officially called South Los Angeles for a number of years now, as they've tried to move forward from its tragic history?

Likely because she was already signing?

Looks like Documentary Short is the first one where the perceived frontrunner didn't win (some had Colette in their predictions, but not me)

Maybe Matlin preferred to sign, and the Academy thought it gauche to force her to speak verbally.

Wait...Collective is nominated in both International Feature Film and Documentary? I'm confused.

I guess I'm just taken by surprise because I know her best from her Seinfeld guest spot so I just assumed she naturally would have both signed and spoke.

Kinda weird how the animal documentary swept the season, the Academy usually aren't into those

Same. I mean, Soderbergh likes to persistently edit things down, so..

It's a documentary in Romanian.

I didn't even realize that Soderbergh was producing the show, actually. Explains why Fennell was so concerned about him during her speech, that seemed legit weird to me at the time.

Right, but isn't "International Feature" for narrative films? Could a documentary be nominated for Best Picture?

I don't think a doc can get a Picture nom, but there is precedent for foreign documentaries to be nominated in both categories — Honeyland

Ceremony feels like it’s moving awfully quickly.
Mary Ann Bernard's always been a pretty ruthless editor.
