Do you guys think Berlin Alexanderplatz will be getting an upgrade (or a release by Arrow or someone else) in the near future? Have been working my way through the Fassbinder filmography as of late and really want to see it, but don't want to drop the money on DVDs.

Everything's in the pipeline to be restored at some point, hence why another Arrow set should be a certainty (once further restos have accrued). I think Berlin... will be restored too but I doubt Criterion would be at all timely with an upgrade (Cassavetes still literally the only box they've upgraded.) I dunno what else has been done but if possible I'd imagine a "The TV Works" set would be killer.

Hoping that Arrow does a second box - I've got the first one and really love it.

I noticed that Filmstruck has the BRD Trilogy, so maybe Criterion will upgrade those?

I did not find the info on Berlin, Alexanderplatz BluRay from Studio Canal but early February Studio Canal is releasing two new Fassbinder Blu Ray sets for Germany:
Acht Stunden sind kein Tag (Tv Series, first time ever release), also out on DVD
Fassbinder Edition with previously available films but Lola might be the first time Blu Ray release.

Criterion in the US is releasing Fox & Friends in two weeks on Blu Ray also!

Baal (1970) was released last year in Germany. The blu-ray has English (and French) subs. Fassbinder acts, Schlöndorff directs.

This article about the restored Eight Hours Don't Make a Day mentions that it's the 'the last of his major works to be restored.'

It also depends on what they mean by 'major works' and 'restored'... Whatever the situation, I don't think anyone can say this is the last time anyone's going to work on his catalogue, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Oh, definitely. There's still the longer cut of Querelle, for one, plus the English/Deutsch versions of Lili Marleen

They don't mention that they're from new restorations but, in the BFI's ongoing Fassbinder retrospective, the only films listed as being screened from 'Digital 4K' (as opposed to just 'Digital' or 35mm) are In a Year of 13 Moons, Lola, The Third Generation and Germany in Autumn. I think it remember being said that the Arrow boxset released last March collected all of the restorations up until that point, which would mean that they must have all been restored since then?

I would like to point out a quirk of the Amazon.de website.
If you choose the option of translating the page in English, it shows the audio language for this set as English. Being almost certain this is incorrect, I changed the option to see the page in the original language (German), and then it showed the audio language correctly as Deutsch.
I have observed this problem with Amazon.it and Amazon.fr as well (for both audio and subtitle languages).
So if you want to order any item based on the translated page, it may be wise to verify the audio/subtitle language by viewing the information in the original site language.

What could be the content of the set? BRD trilogy is unlikely since Arrow has released Maria Braun already. And is Arrow not going to release another set that collects the newest batch of restored Fassbinder films?

The older AE DVD sets contain (Vol I) Lola, Martha, Why Does Herr R. Run Amok? and (Vol II) Veronika Voss, In a Year of Thirteen Moons, The Third Generation, and Germany in Autumn so I'd imagine it's some combination therein.

The Shanghai Film Festival has a mini-spotlight on Fassbinder and Melville, showing 5 films from both directors.

I've never seen Chinese Roulette as I picked up a copy without English subs. Hope the time/location is reasonable so I can get to it.
I'm a big fan of Veronica Voss, and would love to see it on a big screen.
Maybe I can drag my 22 year old niece with me (hey, I dragged her to China), as I'm sure she's never seen a Fassbinder film before.

So does anybody know if Lorenz has plans set for the long version of Querelle to ever surface? She talked about it a few times, but people have set her statements into strong doubt. Then again...

Interestingly, the older Arrow Fassbinder DVD sets have become unavailable, so we'll see what happens with many of these films.

Second Sight will be releasing Berlin Alexanderplatz on Blu-Ray in the UK by the end of the year.

German Blu Ray already out

Last night I watched the Blu-ray of Martha which got released in Germany a couple of weeks ago. It looks rought, there are improvements in color and contrast over the DVD, but not in terms of detail and resolution. The booklet states that they did a 2k scan of the 16mm reversal filmstock Martha was shot on, so this may well be down to the filmstock used, I’m not knowledgeable enough about reversal stock. To me the end result looks more like it was taken from a video source. I recently watched Eight Hours are not a Day, also shot on 16mm for TV but it looks far superior. This is by far the most disappointing of the Fassbinder restorations I’ve seen, which is a shame because Martha is one of my favourites.

As somebody who has seen this on 35mm... I can attest to the screen grabs looking a LOT better than what is "out there". The print I saw looked very much like the DVD - discolored and worn out. So this is very pleasing to my eyes - I do agree, though, that they probably went with a low bitrate for the Blu (god knows why, but Arthouse is 'amazing' at messing these up). Fingers crossed Criterion will make a call and snatch the restoration.

Can someone point me to a list of all the 4K/2K restorations completed/scheduled by the foundation. I'm mostly curious about the status of three films that, from my understanding, were restored in some capacity for DVD many years ago, but that may or may not be included in the foundation's more recent efforts: HERR R, FEAR OF FEAR, and MOTHER KUSTER. I'm also curious if WILD GAME (JAIL BAIT) has any hope of being restored, or if earlier discussions revealed that a restoration of this film definitely will not happen, perhaps due to legal disputes between Fassbinder and the film's writer.

In any event, I've had little success trying to navigate the foundation's website for a full list of restorations, so any help would be appreciated. And my apologies if the answer is easily findable.

Wildwechsel seems stuck in hell - I didn't come across any news. Which is odd, as it never was banned per se... it seems more like a "silent agreement" type situation. If anybody knows anything, news would be much appreciated.

Aside of that - has the "long cut" of Querelle ever been mentioned aside of Lorenz' remarks a few years ago? I recall somebody chiming in that the producers "had no prior knowledge of the existence of such a cut".

After announcing the BA upgrade, I'm curious to see what Criterion has planned for their next Fassbinder. Of the Wellspring titles they grabbed the rights to years ago, it seems they have focused on the 'Fassbinder 101' canon of Fox and his Friends, Merchant, Petra von Kant and threw the early works into an Eclipse.

So I'm curious if they will put a Fear of Fear or Satan's Brew out on blu-ray, or Mother Kuster (which is a top Fassbinder imo). Keep going with the popular titles and upgrade the BRD trilogy?

Or will they hopefully show up with their edition of Querelle finally? While we are at it, didn't Olive announced the longer cut of The Stationmaster's Wife back in 2010 when Despair and I Only Want You to Love Me was released? What ever happened to that?
