Last I heard The Mother and the Whore belonged to New Yorker -- has something changed or has Eclipse fever gotten everyone here into speculating even more randomly than usual?Cameron wrote:I hope the mother and the whore would get it's own criterion release and not be relegated to eclipse.

I realize that Criterion has a number of Bunuels in the Collection. However they are primarily from his late period.
So many of his films are hard to find (and worthwhile), that I'd love to see Eclipse take on a boxset of his early and mid-career output..
I really shouldn't complain as I've managed to get my hands on alot of Bunuel in the past year, through such companies as Yume (Nazarin, Ascent to Heaven, Great Madcap) and Manga (La Joven) and even El Bruto from some other obscure label.
But there's still enough important and interesting Bunuel which could easily comprise a 6-disc box. Land Without Bread, Los Olvidados, Exterminating Angel, Robinson Crusoe, Simon of the Desert, and The Criminal Life of Archibald Cruz would make a spectacular set.
Are any of the titles above likely to come out as full-fledged Criterions? I know Los Olvidados was touring last year. Anyone know about that?

The last time I spoke with the people at Koch Lorber, they said Olvidados is in a legal battle as to who owns the rights. They are unsure when this will end.Lemmy Caution wrote:Are any of the titles above likely to come out as full-fledged Criterions? I know Los Olvidados was touring last year. Anyone know about that?

I would really like to see Eustache's Mother and the whore as a part of Eclipse box set or as an individual CC release but again, knowing the risk of sounding like a broken record: MAURICE PIALAT!!!! It's a fucking crime there's only a few Pialat films released on dvd with English subs. Would be great if Eclipse released the Gaumont's Pialat boxes with eng.subs. Please.

i have absolutely nothing to base my wish upon, but with eclipse eventually moving into and providing films from various film movements and styles, i would LOVE to see a set of films from the Art Theater Guild movement in Japan that produced Toshio Matsumoto's work and other works that are related to the Japanese New Wave. That said a box of "essential" Japanese New Wave titles would rock. And if they could pry some Czech New Wave titles from the corpsey hands of Facets, that would be stellar.
with the previously rumoured Nobou Nakagawa titles, how likely are they to be released in a Nakagawa boxed set compared with something like say, a Japanese Horror set with other titles that were precursors to the whole "J-Horror" fad?

I would imagine that Exterminating Angel is an important enough and famous enough film to warrant a full-fledged Criterion release. Being so short, Simon of the Desert is a problematic title, and I have no idea how they'll handle it.Lemmy Caution wrote:But there's still enough important and interesting Bunuel which could easily comprise a 6-disc box. As Justeleblanc says, Koch Lorber has been fighting to release Olvidados for years now. And Robinson Crusoe was released once by VCI already -- though it's gone out of print in the past year.
But there are plenty of other Mexican Bunuels to choose from....

Barring a Night and Fog-type release on its own, the most logical thing to do would be to pair it up with another Sylvia Pinal film. Since Viridiana is already out, Exterminating Angel would seem to be the way to go.

A Bunuel eclipse box would be quite extraordinary, but all (or most) of the films everyone is mentioning are important enough to put on the main label:
the most likely titles (at least IMO) are:
The Young One (La Joven)
Death in the Garden (La Muerte en el jardÃn)
That Is the Dawn (Cela s'appelle l'aurore)
The River and Death (El RÃo y la muerte)
The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz (Ensayo de un crimen)
The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (I Know VCI has it, but they could restore the two cuts of it)
Wuthering Heights (Abismos de pasión)
Illusion Travels by Streetcar (La Ilusión viaja en tranvÃa)
A Woman Without Love (Una Mujer sin amor)
Mexican Bus Ride (Subida al cielo)
Daughter of Deceit (La Hija del engaño)
The Devil and the Flesh (Susana)
The Great Madcap (El Gran Calavera)
Gran Casino
I left off all of his later films (because they are widely regarded as masterpieces, and I'm sure Criterion would want to release them all spified up) and three mexican films (El, El Bruto and Los Olvidados because they are some of his most widely known films of that period... and because Los Olvidados is owned by Koch Lorber)
Edit: As far as Simon of the Desert goes, I think that it'd make a fitting extra for either NazarÃn or The Milky Way... because of the religious subject matter (that isn't to say that all of Bunuel's films aren't religious)

It's dangerous to speculate since New Wave means a lot of different things to different people, though I myself adhere to Bordwell's definition in Film History... I would guess at the very least Le Beau Serge/Les Cousins and Paris Nous App are shoo-ins for the setMacintosh wrote:Well what titles could possible be in the New Wave Eclipse set?arsonfilms wrote:Filmmaker Magazine already confirmed a French New Wave Eclipse set. Nah. Salo, for certain, will get a big special edition. They'd be nuts to do otherwise.Close The Door, Raymond wrote:They recently announced they got the rights back to release Pasolini's Salo. Would they bundle it together with Arabian Nights (which Image released on DVD in 1998) and Canterbury Tales as an Eclipse release? Even though it already has a Criterion spine number?
