exciting news about _rules of the game_. i believe they'll have a re-release of the dvd with the new print, too. you can see on the existing one the extensive restorations done, and i have been led to believe that the new found print is in even better condition than the older, restored print.

Ehrm, you know, the new print of "Rules of the Game" does probably originate from the same digital intermidiate HD master that was used for the existing DVD.

What about Geoffrey & Stanley? Hitchcock's two Sealyhams who appear with him in THE BIRDS and form the basis for the name of his MARNIE production company. It is all but impossible but I can dream of a deluxe, Criterion release of MARNIE with deleted scenes and a full commentary by Tippi Hedren. More realistically, it could mean a reference to SABOTAGE, YOUNG AND INNOCENT, MURDER, THE LODGER or BLACKMAIL in both silent & sound versions.

Le Corbeau translates to The Raven you silly, and both actors named are in The Raven. There's definitely a connection, I think the guess a few posts up (The Black room?) is a really solid one.

What do all of the above predictions have in common? Yes, they were all WRONG! I think we've got plenty of evidence now that the "wacky animals" in the newsletter are semi-randomly selected to represent existing releases and are not clues of any kind. Any similarity to imminent releases is purely coincidental.

I've been saying the same thing to the entire time. Criterion just puts those "Wacky Animals" in because they're things we'll all recognize and perhaps get a kick out of.

Is this not the RULES OF THE GAME print, recently unearthed, that they delayed the DVD release for?... Now in a pristine new show print... I don't think they've found anything further since....

It even refers to the 'restored digital intermediate', implying that this is the HD transfer (for DVD) of the film restoration plus work with the MTI Digital Restoration System, as noted in the CC booklet...

ellipsis7 is absolutely correct. What they've done here is to take the source material they used for the DVD, scan it in HD and clean it up (which they needed to to for the DVD anyway), and transfer it back to film.

Yes, it's most certainly the latter. There has been no indiciation that Criterion are remotely interested in releasing 49th Parallel and the Glenville is very likely given Criterion's healthy licensing relationship with Warner Bros. Way to crack this case wide open, chief!

It could be one of there famous misspellings and what it really means is that they are coming out with new flannel Criterion shirts and releasing another version of Oliver Twist.
