I couldn't believe that.

I don't know. If Precious wins, then 'yes'. 2005 still holds for me.
Crash made 2005 bad, but the two pronged assault of Avatar and Precious tonight is nauseating. And i'm left hoping for a mediocre film to beat a totally shitty one to salvage it.

Someone just posted on ONTD that Clooney is the Oscars' new Nicholson and he so is: Cut to Clooney. Cut to Clooney. Cut to Clooney.

District 9 should have won make-up over Avatar as well - for a low budget flick, the effects were outstanding.
And the movie didn't suck.

I can't believe this is how bad it's gotten, but I'm actually rooting
for it just to prevent a
Precious win

And Best Foreign Film goes to... Avatar!
It's sickening that Up in the Air, Inglourious Basterds, and District 9 don't have any wins yet. And I am confused by the announcer, did she just call James Cameron an African-American? I can't keep up.

Fair enough.
For the record, I thought the Hurt Locker was merely decent, so I am already rooting for something I don't think is Best Pic worthy. Avatar or Precious would be devastating.

Last year gets a pass because there were virtually no good films to work with. This year, there are at least a handful of decent ones in contention. There's really no excuse for this.

Million Dollar Baby won Best Picture in 2005.
And FYI -
Star Trek won Best Makeup, not
Avatar.
If the voters knew what 'cinematography' meant, it wouldn't have won that, either.

Are they re-playing the score from Fantastic Mr. Fox just to rub it in?

that was awkward: "Will the best director be the first woman, first African-American, or just some other white guy?"

I forgot. It was such a foregone conclusion that I already have pushed it out of my mind. I thought that award went to Mo'nique for a sec.

Hurt Locker was the "mediocre" one I was referring to...but I guess it's shaping up to be behind TWO shitty movies instead of just one now. This is fucking depressing.

Food Inc. was infinitely better than The Cove which was excellent, but a little clunky at times.

i was just thinking semantically - i.e. this year is the 2009 Oscars, so for 2005 in that sense it was Crash. i.e. the Worst Oscars Evar (till now) - that's what i figured he meant anyway.

Could Jeremy Renner win Best Actor please? He's easily the most interesting person they've chosen to cut away to all night, he was actually listening to the acceptance speech.

Dolphin Holocaust was the closest they could come this year.

To be fair, the Academy Awards have always been laughably bad, but Cameron did employ some interesting cinematography into his film - see the cover story of American Cinematographer. Shame about Farrah, she gave a pretty funny performance in Altman's underrated Dr. T and the Women.

That was very lame how they cut away from the Dolphin guy holding up the Dolphin sign ("Text 44something") - it's not like it said "FUCK JAPAN!!!!!!"
whoever produced this year should be shot by Christopher Waltz

Cameron employed some expected, boring cinematography into his film. The White Ribbon and Inglourious Basterds were far more lush and well-shot than they had any right to be.

Best presenters all night! Why can't great filmmakers present every category?
Foreign film: Are they just fucking with us now?
