So I'm trying to order some of the Slovak DVDs from dvdbest, and one of two things is happening. Either:

A. I don't understand Czech, and have no idea what I'm trying to do.

or

B. The shipping for my order costs as much as the order itself (about 24 euro).

Both are equally likely, as far as I can tell. Is this typical of dvdbest? And if so, is there some other retailer someone can recommend with less absurd shipping fees?

Nothing at all, if rumours that I'm hearing are correct. At least not in the immediate future.

Wow, that's a shame. I do hope that the plans to restore the 200 (?) titles haven't fallen through.

I wonder which transfer they're using for Alice? As far as I'm aware, there are essentially two: the old analogue master and the new HD telecine that the BFI created a couple of years ago.

This set costs 80 euro shipped, I hope Gorila.sk starts carrying it.

Reviews for Jan Švankmajer's Faust and Conspirators of Pleasure at DVDFreak from the new Švankmajer box set which I got as well.

IMO, a very nice package!

Well, it's distributed by Svankmajer's own production company Athanor, so one would hope it was definitive.

Going from this article, it seems that the problem is that the Czech Ministry of Culture hasn't allotted a specific budget for film restoration, which is why only three titles have been restored to date. Though it does at least confirm that All My Good Countrymen and Distant Journey are fourth and fifth, and I can't argue with those choices.

The NFA have released a set of Petr Skala's experimental films. Also, the restoration of The Fireman's Ball is getting a Blu-Ray release on November 14th. And finally, going by Google Translate, this HDMag article seems to imply that Jires' The Joke will also be getting a Blu-Ray release.

Does anyone know if Jiri Trnka's Old Czech Tales is or is scheduled to be out on DVD? I went to see it at the NYFF yesterday; and, because of the crazy hours I've been working, I nodded off for part of it.

I saw enough to appreciate how he handled the material. I just missed the climax of the last story, and would love to catch up with it.

I've just read the sad news that the wonderful Czech animator, Břetislav Pojar, has died. It was a few days ago, on the 12th. of October, 2012 - just five days after his 89th. birthday.

There are people on this forum much better qualified than me to talk about the man and his work - I was lucky enough to meet him at a retrospective of his work at the London Barbican last year. Several of his beautiful, and beautifully-made, films were screened, and he then took part in an enlightening, informative, witty - and lengthy! - Q&A session. He had the look, and the manner, of someone 25 years younger than he actually was. Afterwards, he was kind enough to pose for a photo, and give me an autograph. He came across as a man dedicated to perfecting his art - polite, modest, charming, and intelligent. All in all, a lovely guy.
