Yup, KLI at one point was saying they didn't get or weren't going to get Kiss Me Deadly as they didn't think it would sell.

They should also have one more MGM title from the 70s from their previous deal that they already released on BD that will be getting a 4K UHD upgrade, most likely The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974).

EDIT: Strike that. KLI has clarified this is not the case (previous KLI statements were misinterpreted)

A fascinating, strange film that reworks a lot of the ideas and motifs of You Only Live Once as a lighter romance (well, lighter by Lang’s standards), forming a diptych on the sad realities of post-prison life. It’s kind of uneven, not the masterpiece the previous film is, but if you ever wanted to see Lang do montage musical numbers with music by Kurt Weill, run don’t walk. The sound collage prison flashback sequence is unforgettable, pure Lang, and the ending is one of the weirdest in his filmography.

Of the list of MGM UHD possibilities that Finch posted, KLI said they'll be releasing two from the 50's and one from the 60's, so thankfully one of the remaining titles has to be Night of the Hunter, Kiss Me Deadly or Sweet Smell of Success. I assume Sweet Smell is most likely, since the Criterion and Arrow are already from a 4k master.

Right. But there are many more visually interesting films that would truly look stunning in UHD. I'm sure that's probably the angle Criterion is taking going by what they have already released on UHD.

Probably. Feels they're releasing most of these just for the sake of it. They'll do a UHD of 12 Angry Men after (100% lying about) passing on a UHD of Double Indemnity because they think it wouldn't sell.

Did they outright say that? I can only find a post from Feb 2021 where they said that they weren't sure if the sales for DI would be as high as the sales for Touch of Evil. They then made a post in May 2021 saying that sales should do well for DI if it were to receive a 4K release. They also made a couple of posts in later months saying that they wanted to release it in 4K but the rights went to someone else.

I remember the Insider made a remark on the other forum a couple of years ago, something along the lines of "the guy who chooses what we release thinks it won't sell like Touch Of Evil and he's been working for us since the 80s so he knows what he's talking about." Typical Kino Insider answer. Later they saw it got picked up by a real boutique label which has known what it's been doing since the 80s (with some exceptions) and simply changed what they had to say about it.

The market has also changed in the last two years. Criterion didn't think anything was worth releasing on 4K UHD if we are to go by what labels thought two years ago.
