Since when does having characters "call out" their social critiques make for good storytelling? And by what yardstick are you judging whether Bong has been "adequately" explicit in his criticism?

None. But I did get a glimpse at her yardstick which, though not particularly well-decorated, seemed to me to measure something.

So, you think it might be possible that someone out there could sympathize with the idea that the characters and director are insufficiently explicit in their social criticism, but at the same time you suspect that no one would think that doing so would make for good storytelling. Accurate?

I would say that any "social criticism" in this film is almost totally uninsightful and poorly focused (but won't venture a guess at Bong's sincerity).

Criterion is *owned* by disney (why do you think every single insufferable thing made by wes anderson is part of the Criterion Collection? w anderson is a very rich trust fund baby with relatives/friends in serious positions of power within disney). I doubt there’ll ever be a Criterion release of ['A Hidden Life']. disney has no respect at all for Malick nor for the film.

I don't actually love Wilson, but the moment immediately popped into my head. All of which is to say Moonrise Kingdom has infinitely more nuance and depth to its characters than Jojo Rabbit does.

I can see some similarity between the two directors. Anderson means a lot more to me, and some of Waititi's comedies certainly aren't even aiming for nuance and character, but I think his New Zealand-set films are at least working in that same space. Granted, I haven't seen Jojo Rabbit yet, and don't know if that might prompt me to retroactively hate him

I agree with that, and I did see Jojo Rabbit and thought it was the worst of his films by a margin, though the "substance" and "character" assignments should still be reversed in that Twitter convo despite my appreciation for aspects of those NZ films

I haven't seen Jojo yet, but literally none of his other films could be described that way whatsoever and shows that uninformed criticism is a two way street. If anything he's closer to a PG John Waters or Peter Jackson.

I don't think they're that similar stylistically--it's more the sense of humor and obviously the whole sense of children acting like adults and adults acting like children

Eagle Vs. Shark? (I mean, I found it quite sweet, but it is extremely derivative of a whole strand of quirky American indie cinema bubbling around Anderson.)

The similarities in Jojo Rabbit - in costuming, cinematography, camera movement, dialogue delivery, and set decoration are striking. Not trying to imply he's got only one speed, or even that it's wrong to be influenced by another filmmaker's work (as Anderson himself is and everyone who made a film since L'Arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat has been), just that he's definitely trading on it in that instance, and if it's going to be some sort of head to head matchup in bozos like Wilson's eyes, it's very easy to determine who the better filmmaker is on every single level
