Haven’t seen this problem with Criterion but half my recent Kino order was like this

I’ve had a fair number of them where the cover was sticking out of the sleeve but not enough to get damaged. Just enough to really bug my OCD so I had to unwrap them right away to fix it.

I find that it’s very rare that they’re centered, but also rare that it’s extreme enough to cause damage. Just something I’m used to taking a few seconds to readjust when I get a new disc.

I received the John Singleton set today (blu-ray edition) and was sorry to find that it was not the packaging as pictured on Criterion’s site (showing the 4k set). Unless I missed it, there is no mention of the difference in packaging. The blu-ray one is one single plastic case holding the 3 discs, and that “wide” artwork of the 3 covers together appearing much smaller on the reverse side of the cover art.

Saw the blu packaging at B&N the other week and do recall it looking a little off compared to the rest. The spine was especially weird considering they didn’t even choose the nice looking side of the spine. A very plain design.

I see this a lot in the copies at B&N stores. Along with a lot of crunched digipaks…

Speaking of digipaks, what also bugs me is why can't they get the plastic trays mounted correctly or even consistently in their digipaks. The one in Elephant Man 4k for example is upside down in my copy. At least one digipak I have came with multiple plastic trays in them that have some rightside up, some upside down, seemingly random. Sloppy.

This is common these days, sadly. I wish there was someplace to track the titles with different packaging because sometimes it might be worth $5 during the sale to have the deluxe packaging depending on how nice it is. I saw the Blu only Sentimental Value packaging in BN and it looked rather sad next to the digipak

What's weird is I had exactly three titles with messed up cover inserts, so I ordered replacements from another store several months later and those exact three had the same problem!

I don't think I've ever had this happen. You guys are just cursed.

You can add the re-release of the Elephant Man Blu-ray to digipaks that are now in regular Scanavo cases.

Don’t know if this has been mentioned but just received All About Eve and that is in a Scanavo as well.

Thank you, very useful. I was wondering about Isle of Dogs. I actually am not fond of digipacks, but in the Singleton (which I believe is not a combo but separate 4k and blu editions) I was expecting the slipcase and the more elegant look I had seen in the pics of the 4k set. I understand there may be good reasons to make them different, I just wish Criterion would be explicit and clear about what we’re getting when buying a product…

Does that lose any booklet content from the digipak version?

It has been reissued in a plastic case because it turned out a digipack's design was a bad unpractical one, but I don't recall this having led to a change of content.

The replacement packaging for All About Eve was another digipak. This Scanavo is the second repackagjng of the title.

I don't have 4K equipment and I've noticed the past couple of years that even the Blurays don't get the luxe packaging anymore, which I think is a bad move. I expect a certain level of quality, and I know things are just getting more and more expensive. It was easier for Criterion to justify the cases over digis when it came to DVDs because the different form factor, but for the most part Blus and 4Ks there isn't a difference. So for me when there is a packaging difference (I usually consult Chris' photographs each month) I get the 4K/Blu combo pack, the great packaging and I future proof myself for the time I would get a 4K setup. In terms of the Singleton set, it would've been easy for them to manufacture a Blu digi using the same packaging, dunno why they didn't. Regardless, when Criterion opens back up later this summer their packaging replacement program I am going to buy the 4K materials and put my Blus in there.

SLV doesn't have a 4K edition. You are correct that all 3 of those are Blu-ray digipaks. SLV has a plastic slipcover instead of the typical cardboard slipbox.

I think the original SLV case has probably been discontinued. I saw a copy at B&N the other day that just looked like a standard Scanavo case

Oops, I forgot SLV doesn't have a 4K, but the blu rays of NOTLD, Godzilla, and I just remembered also Killers Of The Flower Moon, all standard cases now
