Why not L’assassino? That’s right in their wheelhouse IMHO.

This is probably me nitpicking a bit, but it's just that looking at how many movies they're releasing and what they're currently doing, sure Criterion could release it, but in how many years ?

It remains a darker crime movie which doesn't to me seems spontaneously belonging to Criterion's style, but also (IMO) a lesser Petri movie. (IMO again) Petri later made superior movies that would/should be picked first by Criterion before L'assassino. Investigation of course was the logical first choice, but I'd argue The Working Class Goes to Heaven would be 2nd (and IIRC, this one was recently restored). And tons of other italian movies they still haven't released, or upgraded. I mean, they still haven't upgraded Salvatore Giuliano, and I'd say it's a more important movie than L'assassino.

True, but they have rights to plenty they haven’t released!

That's also part of my reasoning. Criterion has been sitting on tons of titles they could release but still haven't, and I strongly believe that they would prioritise other stuff over what Arrow has been releasing.
Again, it's not to say what Arrow has released isn't good, and it's just my overall feeling (and I might be completely wrong), but that's how I see this kind of things.

Ambersons and Chikamatsu Monogatari for November please (I think MoC's rights expired so Chikamatsu should be feasible?). Fuck Some like it Hot.

Want all three November titles, but only Shampoo is sensibly priced so will likely be pre-ordered by me. Will wait to see if The Tree of Life is 2 for £25 eventually with sex, lies, and videotape (since both will be double-dips). Reckon it'll be a long while before a Zatoichi price-drop but I'll get it eventually!

Shame we don't get The Magnificent Ambersons, True Stories or Chikamatsu Monogatari, but maybe they'll be for the next month (December). Surprised they haven't announced Moonrise, Young Mr. Lincoln or The Breakfast Club yet though - any reason what's stopping them? Ditto Le Samouraï...

Still curious to see if The Silence of the Lambs and Some Like it Hot come from another UK label.

Ambersons may still be with Universal in the UK since they released the DVD but considering Uni released this on a barebones disc they probably wouldn't give a shit about Crit taking it off their hands. Happy about not having to import Tree of Life Extended. Ambersons and Chikamatsu for December would do me nicely.

Supposedly Universal's UK rights to the RKO library have expired and reverted to the owners, which means Warner Bros. Supporting this is the fact that the current UK releases of Citizen Kane and the '33 King Kong are from WB rather than Universal, though theoretically WB could've just licensed those titles.

Great to see the Welles releases here (Ambersons seemed more likely after the recent discovery that several more Warner Archive RKO titles are being added to HMV's Premium Collection). A pity Criterion's Chimes at Midnight is apparently silenced in the UK where are expected to make do with Bongs!

Why is Mishima and Sex, lies and Videotape £25 and they're both single disc Bluray's and most of the rest are £17.99?

Recent digipak releases have been at the higher price point. Ambersons will be too. No idea why, and Strangelove and NOTLD weren't.

Could it be linked to the amount of extras and the price it cost because of the BBFC fees ?

It's strange because the US versions don't show any price increase with the digipacs.
I thought the inclusion of the BBC documentary on Mishima might have pushed that up, but it's happened on the others too.

I'm being greedy though, I just want these films included in the 2x£25 deals that keep happening.

Is the next announcement going to be "We've decided to stop doing UK releases"?

Last few announcements were on a Friday (September 21st), Monday (August 20th) and Thursday (July 26th). I guess we could get them either tomorrow or early next week - best to keep your eye on Sony UK's Twitter. Surprised listings haven't shown up at Amazon or Zoom yet though.

Sawdust & Tinsel is a strange choice given the Bergman set is region-free.

Probably because Artificial Eye already released it (so in a way, similar to the Tarkovsky titles). Presumably, they want to compete with UK labels whenever they can - also, many people may not want to import such a large/expensive set.

Anyway, I'm very happy about True Stories and will maybe even pre-order it (due to it including the soundtrack as well).

I’m grateful for Panique. Isn’t it regarded as one of Duvivier’s best films?

Ambersons is currently £17.99 for pre-order at Amazon, which will be the cheapest it ever is, being a digipak.
