That's ane exciting prospect.

But if the five missing spines indeed belong to a Fuller box, wouldn't Fixed Bayonets (a Fox title) be a better fifth spine, opposed to the documentary, since it (to my knowledge) is short enough to join any of the four features. The theme of the box would seem to be Fuller's first films, and Fixed Bayonets is his fourth.

Of course, Criterion has said that a batch of Malle films will be released early in 06.

The Tati box set was announced with the pretext that Playtime would be included. I can't imagine Playtime would appear in a box set without the other Hulot films, and they all already have spine numbers. Which MEANS, they'd need to add even MORE titles to fill in the void.

OR, perhaphs I'm just being negative because I really want Malle to fill in the gap. Could they possibly be holding off for tElevator to the Gallows to come through from Rialto? That'd make my year.

I guarantee they will release 2 of 3 Things.... It's just a matter of time. Almost every single Rialto title is released by Criterion (or HVe before they folded), and they will not pass up the opportunity to include more Godard in the collection.

Not likely to be the Tati films since three of them already have spine numbers. And we do actually know that the Fuller and Malle sets are coming soon. Kit Parker's website says that he has licensed the Fullers to Criterion for a 2006 release, and the Criterion newsletter tipped the Malles for early '06 as well. Doesn't get more official than that.

Elevator to the Gallows will certainly get a spine number eventually, but since the Rialto print is still in circulation, it's probably a good six months away. It doesn't belong in a box with titles like Au Revoir les Enfants anyway. It couldn't be further removed chronologically or thematically. I would expect Enfants, Murmur, and Lacombe to be released together early this year (either in a box or with consecutive spine numbers). Elevator to the Gallows and Phantom India seem likely for mid-to-late 2006.

hehe, i was just about to post about an Ozu boxset possibly being the missing numbers.

Clearly the missing spine numbers are for the long-promised Rohmer boxset.

All things considered...

It doesn't seem, to me, that the Six Moral Tales would fit on four discs without compromising their order (The Baker at Monceau and Susanne's Career could join any of the features individually, but it would make more sense to package them under one spine number, since they were made immediately within eachother). That leaves four more spines.

The Eisenstein Silent Years, however, fits the five-spine set perfectly! One for the box, and one for each of the four silent features.

Regarding the Ozu box...one would assume that The Only Son would be a part of such a set. What other films would it go well with?

Ozu Box -- centered around "Only Son" -- "I Was Born But", "Passing Fancy", "Inn at Tokyo", "There Was a Father". We're not going to see this -- too many of the films are in marginal condition.

I'm hoping it's volume 2 of Andy Sidaris' Bullets, bombs and babes box.

What's this recent talk of Phantom India and Fire Within? Are they confirmed?

Oh, I've read that list alright, but the message previous to mine sounded like there was news. Mea culpa. I'm a big fan of "The Fire Within", though, and it'd be my first pick for the collection. I will be first in line for "Au Revoir, Les Enfants" when it comes.

Here's something to ponder...

I've noticed that Criterion sometimes releases titles in certain months for specific reasons (such as the Lubitsch in June). So I'll argue that the delay for this box is for two reasons: First, they have nothing to do with Valentine's Day. And two, they have something to do with Greco-Roman assasinations (I believe Caeser was killed in March). So with this in mind, I shall take my guesses....

Kurosawa Box Set

Contains three American-style film noir films from legendary director Akira Kurasawa: High and Low, The Bad Sleep Well and Stray Dog.

I recall someone found a listing for that same item a couple of years ago and it turned out not to be a forthcoming item. Sorry I can't remember the specifics, but I wanted to keep people from getting their hopes up (as I did the first time around).

It's an erroneous listing for the VHS Kurosawa Noir Prepack from HVe from back in the day.

What are the odds of Criterion putting out a Hitchcock box with the same transfers as those new Studio Canal discs in France? Hasn't Criterion liscenced from Studio Canal before?

Diary of a Country Priest was StudioCanal, I believe.

They've licensed steadily from StudioCanal since the very beginning (literally, with Grand Illusion).

I don't see why they couldn't release a Tati gift set with the different spine numbers in tact. Just because they package the discs together doesn't mean they need to be numbered consecutively. Although I realize that some collectors will probably self-destruct trying to figure out how to fit them into a consecutively numbered storage scheme. Maybe Criterion could include cross-reference placeholder slips for people who need the security.
