Maybe you don't like it, but how in god's name do you see the movie as
stupid?
Ahem. M. Schreck...he said it was a "stupid move," not a "stupid movie.

I think he said stupid
move, indicating that he liked the film and regrets trading it away.
I'm hoping the Naked City DVD is a two discer with a comprehensive doc about Dassin. The collection could use a Dassin primer.

Someone was speculating about Criterion also releasing Dassin's Brute Force. Did Image also have that in print at some point?

Whoops-- be that the case, my apologies. Wouldn't be the first time I jumped outa the gate on a misunderstanding, as Sir Tribe might remember from the Monterey Pop thread.
From the context of the sentence (i e the trade) I assumed "move" wazza typo. I'd say "My Bad" as I suspect it corresponds to this situation, but I still don't know what that means! (Can someone pls fill me in?)
EDIT: Yes Image had BRUTE FORCE too, which for awhile fetched huge numbers on Ebay after it went oop (and I had the disc, a post oop remnant, in hand multiple times here in NY, but I held off because I've had the Kino VHS which is from the same transfer as the Image and to this day suits me fin until a suitable disc comes out). I think Gary mentions the whole Ebay frenzy over on the Beev.

It was his bad that he made the trade...or, he shouldn't have made the trade because it was a bad trade.
Dude, whatever you're smoking...share some of it over here!

I could stab you in the stomach for suggesting I like Ashley Simpson dammit.
As for what I'm smoking:
You have your whole life aheada you! These things arent to be dabbled with lightly. At first you think you can control it... once a month, then only on weekends. Yea right. Then you start with the big Special Blind Spot "O uh well I'm smart about it hah hah I always skippa day. Doing it every day creates the habit is all. That's just not something I'm innarested in-- not at all. I dropped this twenty pounds this week cuzza I wanted to-- chubby you understand. I can see by the look on your face that you don't believe me but I got news for you-- you is not my confessor. Fuck off, you.."
Don't throw your life away! Belly lint is a schedule one narcotic-- no known medical value, like aspirin-- and smoking it puts a big waste on the lungs. Just say no...[-o<

I'm completely psyched about this.
(FACT: I'm the only person on that ymdb site to have The Naked City in my top 20.)
I'm on a total Jules Dassin binge -- the guy's the greatest. Even his completely forgotten movies are worth seeing. (The Affairs of Martha plays like a second-tier Preston Sturges picture, for instance. Nazi Agent has some strong performances, and some really nifty shots that predate a lot of Dassin's later noir camerawork.)
The more I see from him, the greater he gets; at the moment, I'd probably rank Dassin as among the top seven filmmakers of all time.
(I'm psyched for this.)

After Vincent Sherman passed away earlier this year, is Dassin oldest living director from classical film-noir period?

Speaking of, ever see his short for THE TELLTALE HEART? One of the better Poe adaptations I've seen, almost ranks up there with Epstein's USHER in capturing the psychological melancholia of Poe (as opposed to the standard Price/Cormanesque gothic/horro cornucopia).
Dassin has always been The Man. Just the coolest dude ever manufactured by the universe.

Just to clear things up, Yes, I loved Thieve's Highway. I traded it along with Sword of Doom for an OOP copy of Notorious. I guess it's not the worst trade I could have made, since Thieve's Highway can still be purchased.

Sounds like a fair trade to me.
Btw. has ANY of the pictures in these monthly hint ever been shown to have an actual connection with an upcoming release?

They're always from previous releases.

Hmmm...one can only assume it does indeed refer to 'The Naked City', although it's certainly going to have to go some to make me switch from my R2 French Wild Side boxset which is simply stunning in the A/V dept etc.

I have not followed these newsletters too closely, but the Naked City quote is fairly straightforward. How about the drawing of the pig? Could that be another clue? Pasolini's Porcile?

For those interested in Ozu, how about reading these tea-leaves left by Peter Cowie:
Cowie wrote:While waiting for Late Autumn and An Autumn Afternoon, my favorite Ozu movies, I'm happy to choose Tokyo Story
Good news, unless we assume that Cowie is as much in the dark about specific future releases as we are and is just randomly speculating.

I think montgomery has nailed it. The character speaking is the Seventh Seal (so just when we've figured out that the wacky animals have nothing to do with the clue, they go and make it an integral part of it - the chess games are a cute touch).
So we're looking at five pre-Seventh Seal Bergmans, presumably in a box set (since they're not likely to release five films by the same director within a few months of one another without putting them in a box). There are a lot to choose from, and only Sawdust and Tinsel and Summer with Monika leap out at me as unavoidable choices.
Maybe 2007's recurring theme will be box sets.
