I liked this cover very much, the other is almost like a Spoiler.

They should uppercase the A in "an" if they're going to do so for the other two words. Looks like an Eclipse cover to me.

What's with the out of place steam pipes?

Jesus Christ, Criterion. Ditch this cover designer FAST. He can't spell and he can't even convincingly photoshop anything. Those pipes are thrown in there so poorly I'd be given to thinking this is actually a dotcom-produced fan cover put up there by a hacker.

That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the thing.

So in these various Autumn Afternoon covers, we've had:

-Incorrect Japanese title
-Incorrect English title
-Two distinct misspellings of the director's name
-Smokestacks composited in MS Paint

I know absolutely nothing about this film, but judging from the cover, I'd assume it was the Japanese equivalent of Red Desert.

What an awful, awful cover. #-o If this isn't a clumsy fake job, then someone at Criterion needs to be met with the rubber hose.

Who knew a project like the cover for An Autumn Afternoon would have such a arduous production attached to it? Perhaps it's cursed.

Aside from the indefensible spelling errors, I can at least see where they're coming from with the design- A Japanese style wrapper, surrounding a photograph from the film. Those pipes which people thought were some poor Photoshopping job seem to be a card tucked under the label, probably to alleviate all the empty space in the (all too clearly faked) top of the photograph...

This isn't the first time the initial cover design has has misspellings. I know for a fact that they misspelled "Michael" as "Micheal" Powell for the A Canterbury Tale cover--I emailed them and it was fixed a day or two later And they've done this at least one or two other times, but I can't recall the exact instances.

I was just trying to play devil's advocate! 8-[ This cover really makes me wonder if the folks at Criterion are having a huge laugh at our expense.

I e-mailed Mulvaney about the errors on the "An Autumn Afternoon" cover and got this reply today:

Thanks for your email! Yes, we do plan to correct the typos before the cover art is printed. Thanks for your vigilance, and feel free to write in again if you have any other concerns!

Yeah, what the fuck? Counting the cover they put out in the press release, has Criterion ever taken so many public stabs at a cover design? The past non-Eclipse Ozu covers have ranged from pretty good to lovely.

As long as there are no typos on the spine, though, I think that's all I'll be looking at 99% of the time.

I see they took my "An" uppercasing suggestion on board. I'm sure they're enjoying following this thread =D>
