My circle of friends seem pretty much to be Criterion's new demographic and they all love 9 to 5 very much, I could bet on it

Plus Michael Koresky’s new book Films of Endearment has a chapter devoted to the film. He might have some influence at Criterion.

I'll never forget a Canadian friend I was visiting in Vancouver thinking the Dolly Parton magnet on the fridge in the airBnB he was staying in was out of left field compared to the rest of the decor, and I had to explain that no, really,
everyone loves Dolly, in a way that I don't know is true for any other celebrity. A while back, the guy from RadioLab—whose father happens to be Parton's doctor—did
a pretty interesting podcast exploring her popularity and how she's managed to maintain general good will on both sides of the American political spectrum.

There’s also that fanaticism over Dolly Parton than seems to have exploded with younger people the last decade
I'd say especially in this last year- she's been continuously in the spotlight for her public progressive rhetoric and actions as Trump's presidency wound down. I fully believe she was more grounded in other bubbles prior, though she's entered the more progressive ones recently with a tenacity that has a staying power. Maybe I've been living under a rock, but I forgot Dolly Parton even existed until about a year ago and now I can't forget her.

When we got our first VHS player in 1980-ish, 9 to 5 was the first movie we rented. I must have watched it 20 times.

This could be a fluke, but I noticed that in the "Shop the Collection" section on Criterion's site, Le Cercle Rouge was listed as the cover title on 'All Films', which caught my eye because I didn't recall any OOP titles filling that slot in the past. Obviously this is randomized as you continue to hit refresh, but I experimented by refreshing for a few minutes and the Melville came back up again while no other OOP titles did. Again, this might be nothing, but it seems strange to be included within the algorithm of randomized titles to shop while other OOP titles are not.

I was just on the "Shop the Collection" page and I got The Third Man cover under the "All FIlms," so I don't think Le cercle rouge showing up means anything. (Although, I do believe it was confirmed that they do have Le cercle rouge again.)

Is Criterion still planning/working with John Waters to get more of his early/Divine-era stuff out? Pink Flamingos and Desperate Living need releases

Waters had said following the release of
Polyester that he was unsure of future releases (the actual quote is somewhere deep in this thread). Waters had also said Warner Archive had approached him for a
Pink Flamingos blu ray. Since 2019 though, nothing has been said about a forthcoming release. Seeing that the version on the channel is in rough condition and in the wrong aspect ratio of 1.33:1, and that Criterion and Warner still have a good relationship, I can see Criterion releasing at the very least
Pink Flamingos.
Desperate Living, however, I so badly want to rewatch.

I thought 1.33 was the correct aspect ratio and it was reframed to 1.85 and remixed in stereo for the restored version that debuted at Sundance in the mid-90s? At that point it was optically blown-up from 16mm to 35mm, so it makes sense. Not sure what the version is on the Criterion site, but its worth mentioning that the restored version has a few audio cues changed due to rights issues with the music. Guess some people are too narrow minded to have their music associated with a film where a guy gets sucked off by their mother. [-X

If that is the case with the framing, I never knew that until now! I have grown accustomed to the framing being 1.85:1 or 1.66:1 since I saw it at The Ken in San Diego at Midnight while attending UCSD! Do you know which songs have had to be removed due to rights. I know in the re-release of Female Trouble and Multiple Maniacs they had to alter, so it is out of the question Pink Flamingos will change its soundtrack.

Desperate Living is the only one I really want left (I'm admittedly not a big fan of
Pink Flamingos despite thoroughly enjoying every other early Waters), which manages to sustain its entertainment despite peaking hard in the first ten minutes, which I think is the best work Waters has ever done

This is correct, and while it's not perfect, the copy on the Channel now is certainly as good at the proper 1.33 version has ever looked on home media -- though I can't imagine this copy being the basis for a blu ray release.

Janus Films sent out a list of their NYFF releases that is quite exciting:
-Flowers of Shanghai
-Muhammad Ali, the Greatest
-Smooth Talk
-Xiao Wu

What’s the date on that list? These all played during the 2020 NYFF, and two of them are already available on disc from Criterion.

That's exactly right, I definitely miscommunicated. The dates are starting as soon as next week, it's a "redux" so that people can actually see these in theaters. 2021's NYFF stuff won't be announced until September as usual, I would assume. This is definitely in the wrong thread; please feel free to move/remove it.

In this
article about the preservation and restoration efforts of the UCLA Film & Television Archive, it was stated that a restoration for 'All That Money Can Buy', aka 'The Devil and Daniel Webster', had been performed and was planning on being rereleased later this year.

Raoul Peck's Lumumba: Death of a Prophet (1990) is now listed on the WCF website (Peck's earlier documentary, not the biopic).

The page for Onibaba on the Criterion site has added 9 different screenshots and a clip of a scene of the movie, which is a strong indication that an upgrade will be announced today.
