Has there been any mention of whether Kino’s Truffaut releases will have burned-in yellow subtitles like the Twilight Time editions?

I don't recall them mentioning the subtitles, but I think Kino said they are the same masters as the TT releases.

from the Kino Lorber Studio Classics thread on Blu-ray.com:
On masters:
Kino Lorber Insider wrote:The masters for BRIDE, MISSISSIPPI and ADELE H will be the same ones TT released.
The masters for SMALL CHANGE, WILD CHILD and MAN WHO LOVED WOMEN will be coming from MGM, they may be the same as the ones released in the UK or different.
MGM will be receiving the master for THE GREEN ROOM from the French distributor.
On subtitles:

I'm sure we'll receive textless masters and the subtitles will be in the ON position, but optional.
In case you're wondering how can that be possible if they use the same master TT used, the 2020 German Explosive Media release of
Mississippi Mermaid already proved that it could be arranged (

Good to know, and thanks for the information! That might make it worthwhile to replace my Twilight Time copies.

Nice in theory to own foreign-language films without burned-in subtitles, but in practice never in life will I watch them without subtitles. So who am I kidding.
And trust that Kino’s subtitles will be riddled with typos.

There's no earthly reason to release any film with burned-in subtitles, no matter what language. The technology makes it simple to turn them on or off. If you don't like yellow subtitles (who does?), you can extract the subtitle track and replace it (providing you have ripped the film and are using something like a Plex server for viewing).
Also, subtitles get updated from time to time with improved translations.

Many times forced (not burned-in, very few Blus do that) subs are a contractual requirement

Kino's been known to make the existing translations
worse though, which I think was Furstemberg's point.

I agree. There should always be the option. But when it comes to my own library-building needs, optional subtitles alone are not enough to justify an upgrade or side-grade. And since we know already that the Kino subtitles will be either identical to the TT or worse (have they ever done new translations?) and with little chance of enticing new bonus material, I don’t feel the need to replace my TT editions.

Their covers will certainly be better. That may be the only arena in home video in which they consistently come out on top

Their commitment to original poster art is nice but they often replace the original fonts with generic free-download fonts, poorly integrated and sometimes with spelling errors. My favorite is David O’Selznick. Just priceless.

This label just has the world’s biggest hardon for Hannibal Lecter. Can’t wait for the UHD of Hannibal Rising

Who owns the rights to Manhunter? MGM? If so, who knows whether Bezos will let any catalogue favorites go at all. Do we know of any MGM titles that were licensed since the Amazon takeover?

MGM in the US, and StudioCanal everywhere else. Kino said it wasn't available, so most likely Shout Factory re-acquired it.

Thanks, dwk. Hopefully Studio Canal will enlist Fidelity for encoding when they finally get to Manhunter (or Shout if they got the UHD licence). I just read elsewhere that a 4k restoration was screened theatrically in France (last year?).

I actually like Red Dragon quite a bit, and don't find it superfluous next to the superior Manhunter either. The cast is strong and there are a few interesting scenes where Will Graham is putting puzzle pieces together in new ways and locations not in Mann's film, even if the result is the same. That said, there's no reason this should get upgraded before the Mann film or plenty of other titles. It also feels like KLSC has been appropriately selective of their 4K title choices in contrast to their brand of releasing anything and everything randomly on blu-ray, so this does seem left-field for their UHD format announcements.

Disney is interested in destroying culture, Amazon is more interested in destroying competitors and making a profit off it, I don't see them changing any licensing. Criterion and Arrow have both had quite a few MGM licenses come out this year
KLI has revealed some details. 52 films, 38 new to Bluray, and 8 UHDs. decade breakdown:
1910s x 1
1920s x 5
1930s x 6
1940s x 6
1950s x 11
1960s x 6
1970s x 1
1980s x 6
1990s x 4
2000s x 4
2010s x 2
four silent films, so obviously the 1910s title and three of the 1920s. wonder what the 20s talkies are

Agreed. It’s a good movie. The source novel is excellent, the script is a fantastic adaptation, and the talent (the actors and the DP) is similarly top shelf with the notable exception of the, um, director. Hard to totally mess that up.

In addition to the breakdown of the new deal above, there is also one title released on BD by Kino from a previous Universal deal that will be getting a UHD upgrade.

Two of the silent films will be part of a double feature release, so likely two films from the same director or starring the same lead actor. I wouldn't be surprised if the 1910s film is one of these double feature films, since films from that era would likely be an even tougher sale than films from the later silent era.
