Just because they package the discs together doesn't mean they need to be numbered consecutively. Although I realize that some collectors will probably self-destruct trying to figure out how to fit them into a consecutively numbered storage scheme. Maybe Criterion could include cross-reference placeholder slips for people who need the security.
The Truffaut set has non-sequential spine #s.

What does anyone know about the chances of us seeing more Bergman television movies? I know there are still a few out there that would be perfect for a criterion release:
The Rite, From the Life of the Marionettes, and Face to Face.

None are forthcoming at least in the near future. I've asked them repeatedly about Face to Face but they continue to say that either they have no rights or plans for it. Keep your fingers crossed I guess.
Tartan in the UK has some very good DVDs of The Rite and Marionettes. I have them myself and can recommend them for those who will not wait for the possible Criterion or R1 releases.

I know of the Tartan releases of The Rite and Marionettes but I have never been able to find a copy of Face to Face. Do you know of one?

Regarding forthcoming Hitchcock, JM told me in may that Criterion hope to release more Hitchcock in the future. Hopefully this will include the early Hitchcock, and hopefully the excellent Studio Canal transfers

There isn't an official DVD out of that amazing work anywhere in the world. Not even in Sweden. However, you can find a bootleg version of the theatrical version in swedish with english subs on supperhappyfun.com. I bought mine there and it's perfectly alright and it will do just fine until a better version comes out.

Also has anyone ever turned up the 5 hour TV version of 'Best Intentions'. It was apparently shown in the middle of the night some years ago on C4 but I can't find any trace of official or otherwise copies.

Had thought this might be so, but in JM's words.
Dear Daniel,
We hope to release some Teshigahara, Kiarostami, and Erice in the future, but nothing is certain at this time.
Best,
JM

Sounds to me as if they ARE forthcoming, but their distribution months haven't reached the point of finalization.

I forget the exact response but I emailed about the Eisenstein Silents set and he said something to the jist that nothing was definite at the time, but they were persuing it.

I also got a reply a few weeks ago from him saying that they "hope" to release some more Mizoguchi in the coming year, and that there were no plans for any Satyajit Ray releases...

Oh, and he also said they hope to release some more Powell and Pressburger titles in the future...no big surprise

No other Roeg films appear on our current production schedule.
Best,
JM
Question Type: Question
Comment: Now you have brought two more Roeg titles to the collection can we hope for similar treatments to Insignificance and/or Eureka????

I know that Super Happy Fun doesn't provide cover art for their titles, but what do the disks themselves look like? If anyone could provide a photograph or scan of Face to Face, or any of their other titles, I would greatly appreciate it. Slightly unrelated, but has anyone purchased their copy of Bergman's The Touch and can comment on the quality of the print?

All three of these prospects are mouth-watering, and I don't think we've had any hint of Kiarostami before.
As Sherlock Jr. noted, this guarded response is more promising than the flat refusals found elsewhere. It's a refrain we've heard many times before, but has anybody actually been keeping track of the hit rate on these? i.e. did anybody ever receive the equivalent of "we hope to release some Roeg, Kobayashi, Wajda, Welles in the future, but nothing is certain at this time."
It might be interesting to keep a running tally of the names that have occurred in this formula so we can ascertain just what it might mean. For example, it could be code for "this is happening, but it's going to be some time off, and who knows what might happen in the meantime," or it could just mean that these are directors they're interested in and are actively pursuing, but that's all - no guarantee of any ultimate release.

Anyone else wishing for a Pabst release already?
I want my Threepenny Opera and Westfront 1918!

It comes in a CD jewel case. I know, it sucks. I've also got
The Touch from them and picture quality is VHS sourced as is
Face to Face. They both look OK, though.

I don't want to get my hopes up too much but I asked about Billy Wilder, specifically The Major and the Minor, and Mulvaney said "We hope to release some Wilder in the future, but nothing is definite at this time." Unless he's just screwing with me, this sounds at least half promising since that's probably the same answer he'd give for anything that is forthcoming, but hasn't been announced yet.
Double Indemnity would be my first choice, but I just can't imagine Universal allowing that one to be released by someone else. Then again, I can't figure why they haven't released it themselves already either.

Maybe Criterion is actually trying to get the rights to Double Indemnity.
