I believe I may have found a copy of the original Salo DVD

Yeah, I think I found a used of copy of the super rare original Salo DVD at a record in Chicago. (Salò (film) Could you guys be so kind as to help me confirm it?

I've done research and most signs point to it being authentic. It doesn't have the tell-tale white ring, but I've read rumors that some authentic copies don't have it. Since it has the NIMBUS logo and the correct DVD serial code etched into the inner ring, I'm pretty sure its the real deal.

Here's some pictures

If it is indeed real, then I'll be putting it up for sale.

I haven't checked recently, but I can't imagine that they sell for all that much any more.

That one looks to be official, the white ring is there by the way. I've kept mine for sentimental reasons. There's only 2000 in existence. I would hold onto it.

I love the idea of keeping a copy of Salo around for "sentimental reasons".

It does have somewhat scary implications, however ...

Anyone know any way of determining how much a copy would sell for in this day and age?

What? Buy it from Amazon, or Criterions website, the most you should pay for this DVD is the $40 MSRP.

He/she's referring to the old OOP version.

You could try and sell it to avid collectors for a high price, but with the new CC and BFI release, I dount many people will pay much for it.

It's not. It would have had to have existed first before they could discontinue it.

There are both French & UK blu-ray imports of Salo that are very much still available. Both releases are coded for Region B, though.

Yes, but that has nothing to do with the mythical Criterion Blu-ray this fellow thinks went out of print.

I have the only copy of the Blu-Ray Salo. I wanted to see the peanuts in the poop more clearly.

But, being that the user only made one post about it and with no mention of Criterion in his post, I don't see how we can assume that he's referring to a Criteron blu-ray release, correct?

He posted it in the thread relating to the Criterion release of the film.

Apparently the movie has now been unbanned in Australia (originally banned in the 70s, unbanned in 1993, banned again a few years later) for a DVD release, but this rather awful article doesn't make clear if it is cut or not ("modified") or why exactly three hours of contextual extras are apparently compulsory (I doubt they are). In any case, it makes me feel more relaxed about importing the BFI Blu-Ray.

Edit: and boy you have to love that headline...

I was wrong about the supplementary features - apparently their presence WAS a big part of the decision to allow the film to be released on DVD - it is still verboten in cinemas!

This sort of decision should be popularized in Germany. Some nice Riefenstahl or Veit Harlan discs with three hours of extras - best thing that could happen

I'm there. Sure beats seeing fireworks on TV (or outside the window here in Gotham). Now to figure how I could get from Manhattan to Brooklyn without getting lost... :-s

I would love to see this with a live audience, that would be a hell of a time. Too bad I don't live anwhere near the city.

I'm as much a cineaste as the next person here, but really, this movie is someone's idea of a good time on July 4th?

I once played it in a double bill with Ai no corrida on Boxing Day - and we did very nicely out of it.

Our rationale was that these films were absolutely guaranteed not to be on television, at least not in the four-channel pre-satellite era.

Funnily enough, the Oshima played quite regularly on German TV in the last ten years or so, and seemingly even uncut. No chance for "Salo", of course, but I can even understand that.

Too bad I don't live where this is playing on July 4th. Perhaps I should hold a sparkler while taking a shit on the fourth of July.
