Maybe it's an ongoing project with stuff from Il Cinema Ritrovato (a new closer relationship between Criterion & Cineteca di Bologna?), blog entry here pretty comprehensive...

Actually, the Japanese series is the mysteries of Seicho Matsumoto (the writer) and it includes Yoji Yamada's excellent "Kiri no hata" (Banner in the Mist), which is as good as the best Nomura adaptations (and some other good directors also did adaptations as well).

I'm feeling confident about June being a great month, just in time for the summer BN sale.

Picnic at Hanging Rock (dual) and The Last Wave (BD) (Or, as I've come to call it lo these many months, the Peter Weir Upgrade Spectacular)
Deer Hunter (dual)
Bad Timing BD
Les Blank Documentaries Eclipse

Bonus July pick: 50th anniversary edition of A Hard Day's Night (released 7/6/64)

I think we'll have to get a box set in June, due to all those rumored (Tati, Demy, Apu, Wenders, Morris, etc.) And A Hard Day's Night is a lock (in my mind at least).

Criterion apparently re-tweeted a post about a MoMA screening of Jodorowsky's Dance of Reality. Probably nothing to it but it's worth mentioning that Anchor Bay discontinued their Jodorowsky discs. Severin's release of Santa Sangre has also been discontinued for awhile according to MMM. ABKCO picked up the rights to Dance of Reality. A former Criterion producer told me years ago that Criterion had been in negotiations for El Topo/Santa Sangre/Fando Y Lis but the deal fell apart in large part because ABKCO wanted them to use extras produced in house at ABKCO. Maybe Criterion wants to take another crack at Jodorowsky? ABKCO needs to find a new home for all these titles. If not Criterion; maybe Shout!

Unfortunately, Santa Sangre is only OOP because of Severin changing distributors. That said, I've also been wondering if Criterion might go for the (previous) Anchor Bay titles. If not, Shout! does seem a likely home; they were willing to accept Universal's transfer of Cat People, so who are they to pick a fight over in-house extras?

Oops. I forgot about the clue for Midnight Cowboy. That was long enough ago, that I would be surprised if it weren't announced soon.

Personally, my dream Jodorowsky box set is:
  • Fando y Lis
    El Topo
    The Holy Mountain
    The Dance of Reality
    Jodorowsky's Dune
But that's just me. Jodorowsky's Dune is a total possibility since that movie is being released through Sony, though.

My Prediction: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

(Yes, I know there's 0 possibility of this happening, but it's #1 on my wishlist [-o< )

If Criterion could make a deal for the Jodorowsky titles with ABKCO, would it be worth it to them to also pick up Sympathy for the Devil? Maybe paired up with a restoration of Godard's One Plus One cut of the film?

The Anchor Bay Jodorowsky boxed set and individual releases are pretty excellent as is. I doubt there's much incentive for Criterion obtain the rights to his older film as is, but I would love to see them release The Dance of Reality and Jodorowsky's Dune.

Huh, until this very moment, I hadn't realized it's #1 on my list, too.

And it would sort of be the ultimate get. Not just because it's Warner Bros. But because Warner Bros. actively despises the film. And even with high exec turnover there are likely some in power still who remember it well enough they'd rather spite the film and Andrew Dominik than allow their company to make a little more of its money back, particularly if it means rewarding the film with a better transfer, new supplements and the prestigious aura of a Criterion release. It would essentially be a signal that any Warner title is way more possible than we've previously thought.

Not to mention it would hopefully be Dominik's preferred longer cut.

Well I'm hoping its something extremely unlikely. Something out of left field completely like maybe an upgrade of Jigoku which is one of the lesser talked about films already in the collection. It seems like a lot of the non-Kurosawa titles from Japan don't get the love they should. At least not from this board within the last year or so which is too bad. I would love to see something unexpected entirely like The Duellists, Luc Besson's Subway or Diva something along those lines. That would be radical. I hope one of these days I get one of those kinds of surprises, guess we will find out on Monday.

I would like something unexpected too; my biggest hope is that Criterion managed to snag The Alamo from MGM and will give it the same deluxe treatment lavished on It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World with the roadshow version reconstructed/restored along with plenty of bonus features. I know that may make me sound like a rube, but a fellow can dream, no?

There's a good Shout Factory Blu-ray of this that came out last year.

Could The Last Detail be coming? I saw a DCP of the restored film last year, but have not heard word one about a subsequent video release. Complete news blackout equals a CC release, right?

The Last Detail would be a great surprise. Thats the kind of out-of-left-field surprise I would love to see.
