I think this has to win some sort of award for total misunderstanding of how filmmaking works:

Brutally Honest Oscar Voter on Best Editing Category
Star Wars: [The Force Awakens] was really good but I don't know how much of the editing was actually CGI, so I find it hard to consider that against something like The Big Short or Spotlight. Mad Max was not all CGI, from everything I've read — there were real stunts going on in that one — so I feel comfortable voting for it here.

It's off putting to see some academy members scream that diversifying the ranks and letting more women and minorities in will dilute the prestige and meaning of the awards while other members freely admit to not seeing all the movies they're tasked with voting on! What could dilute the meaning of your vote more than, I didn't see all the movies in this category, but I'm going to cast a vote anyway. If you're too busy/lazy to see all the nominees or to take 10 seconds to google the difference between sound mixing and sound editing maybe you're not qualified to vote for the freaking academy awards? These interviews are a good reminder that despite the protestations of some academy members one's taste in movies aren't a skill.

he also said the revenant was disqualified from production design because it was outdoors, so he voted for the other outdoors movie, mad max. So yeah, really doesn't understand how filmmaking works.

I've been jamming through some of the nominees this last week and I have to say that Shaun the sheep was utterly stellar, a near perfect 80 minutes of silent film comedy, frequently genius and possessing a Chaplin esque poignancy at times.

On the not recommended list, the future Tony winning Steve jobs film was... Well done..? Mostly it just reminded me of how much I've always disliked or hated Steve jobs, I broke down last year and purchased my first personal apple product, and this movie reminded me that I never liked any aspects of apples big brother patronizing attitudes. That's always been the irony of the 1984 commercial for me, big brother Steve has always been looking over your shoulder demanding end to end control over the item you purchased. It's funny, the San Bernardino stance from Apple was making me think about getting an iPhone for the first time, then I watched Steve jobs and now I can't imagine getting an iPhone.

Unfortunately this has been a common practice and not only for the Academy members, but also for the various guilds. That's why I take this whole awards thing with a grain of salt.

How about the Whoopis, Spike Lees and others have the guts to say who does not deserve a nomination as to get the African American in. It's easy to scream about Will Smith but say who he should replace. I heard a sound bite on the radio this morning from some guy who is the head of an organization, says he is not going to watch the Oscars "because there are no blacks nominated." Then he named three potential snubs. You can probably guess who he mentioned. But I thought, show some guts and say who shouldn't, Matt Damon, Eddie Redmayne, someone else. But the guy would probably say, I don't care as long as an African American is in. Which makes this subjective process on awarding actors all the more silly when many choose awarding based on popularity, race, ethnicity or my favorite from one of the voters (Stallone is a pig), character. I'll spend Sunday night tearing open the cellophane to CC's Autumn Sonata. Happy viewing.

Well on a blu-ray enthusiast board, that's not exactly a radical stance.

No Fail Oscar Predix, in which I make all selections based on what would be the least surprising thing to win:

Best Picture: the Revenant
Best Director: AGI
Best Actor: DiCaprio
Best Actress: Larson
Best Supporting Actor: Stallone
Best Supporting Actress: Vikander
Best Original Screenplay: Spotlight
Best Adapted Screenplay: the Big Short
Best Cinematography: the Revenant

I'm still somewhat convinced Spotlight will win over the Revenant, as it seems like the perfect consensus number two pick across the board, but the above model doesn't allow for gut feelings

DiCaprio and Damon are out.

Rylance and Bale are out.

Now there is room. I don't care about the color of the people who replace them. I don't think any of these were great performances. No offense to those who did.

To hell with Will Smith, performances like Michael B. Jordan's and Samuel L. Jackson's deserved to be recognized this year and were entirely overlooked as not even being in the conversation. That's unfortunate.

This may sound like a smart ass question but I intend it with sincere ignorance curiosity and humility (Hateful Eight spoilers ahead):
Spoiler
Does anyone know off the top of their heads some winners or nominees for either actor category where the character is an apparent unrepentant rapist?
I think Jackson's performance is tremendous but I think that somehow if that were the only black role nominated we would be getting even more outraged thinkpieces than just the OscarsSoWhite stuff.

I liked "Creed" a lot, but in my opinion, Michael B. Jordan's performance was only good, not great. There were a couple of minor little bad acting moments, in fact. Again, I think he carried the film well, but his acting is nowhere close to the performance that Fassbender put in for "Steve Jobs" for example. Fassbender is a more accomplish and superior actor, in my opinion.

I felt that way too. I love Jordan's work, but I felt like a lot of what he did in Creed was done better by him when he played Vince on Friday Night Lights.

You can pretty much add Son of Saul, Amy and Inside Out. Really hoping for some upsets to make the show interesting but will probably have to do with the other tech awards.

You know, the more I read these ballots, the more I can see Room winning Best Picture. It seems to be the one that is liked by everyone, whereas the other seven BP nominees have people that don't care for them.

The crazy thing is whatever does win BP is sure to disappoint the majority of voters since there is no clear frontrunner.

Also, if Miller is able to snag Director from Innaritu it may be because of the women in the industry.

Bill Simmons actually had an interesting theoretical that I'm going to toss out here: if Matt Damon were in The Revenant and Leonardo DiCaprio were in The Martian, who would be favored to win that category tomorrow?

Still DiCaprio. He's the better actor. But more importantly he has the reputation of being due an Oscar.

Well, it's an interesting argument, and it relies on the partial truth that often voters decide because of the part rather than the performer. If that wasn't true you wouldn't have the stereotype of most winning performances being based on real people and/or people with a physical ailment.

Oscar aside, his idea that DiCaprio not having the inherent mainstream charm of Damon would be a detriment to The Martian is probably the point I agree with the most.

I would go with the part and say Damon. Astronaut Mark Watney isn't as juicy a part; if anything all the grumblings that Cranston as Trumbo took a nom away from Will Smith or Michael B Jordan I would say it was Damon.
