Any of you get a sense on the general reaction to Hopkins' win? Most people I follow on Twitter aren't upset, but that's a very limited perspective and I imagine many consider it "disrespectful"

Watching some of this last night made me honestly wonder: Who is the target audience for this in 2021?
It seems like most people who are serious about movies find the Academy's taste kinda middle-brow. They see the show more as a marketing event than as an actual celebration of the year in movies.
And it seems people who are not that serious about movies, but who enjoy them and might like the fashion or the celebrity moments, aren't thrilled about sitting through hours of technical categories and tributes and montages and humanitarian awards in order to get to the acting categories.
Almost nobody I know watched this last night, even though most people I know like or love movies. It says something that, if you like football, you're definitely going to watch the Super Bowl, no question. But if you like movies, eh, you maybe will possibly have the Oscars on in the background or something.

As Anthony Hopkins has finally made
his decree as king, I suppose I should make mine:
Everyone who posted their predix in this thread needs to watch Christophe Honoré's
On a Magical Night, which can be rented from a variety of streaming services, and post their thoughts in
the dedicated thread. It's a pretty breezy 88 minutes, and I think a lot of people on this forum will enjoy it.
If you've already seen it and don't think a rewatch will give you anything to add, feel free to watch/post about

Hopkins' speech for his first win's online, and as he's mentioned in interviews, he really didn't think he was going to win back then either. (He nearly skipped the ceremony as it coincided with the anniversary of his father's death, and he makes a touching reference to that in his unprepared remarks.)

As it turns out, Hopkins was visiting his father's grave hours before the ceremony began (while it was still day time in Wales).

Yes, some did take issue with Boseman losing (which was compounded by Davis losing to McDormand).
Of the relevant films, I've only seen
Nomadland - she was good, but I can't say her performance immediately springs to mind as something I'd vote for.

Davis should never have been in conversation for winning anyways, though I liked Boseman in the film more than some here. The general vibe I get from those who care about awards is that Hopkins indeed deserved it more on the merits of the perf but that they didn't think he'd win. I am beyond unmotivated to get caught up with this year's slate, but I am actually looking forward to seeing the film given its wins
Worth keeping in mind that the Academy actually doesn't have a great track record with posthumous noms translating to wins. Ledger would likely have won even if he lived, even people who hate the film acknowledge what he brought to that role, but like James Dean couldn't win TWICE after dying!

The Best Actor slate this year was excellent and practically any of them (but mostly the top 3 contenders) would've been deserving imo (and, with the caveat that I haven't seen a lot of the Actor winners of the aughts and even early 2010s since I was busy watching Commando and Best Adapted Screenplay nominee Shrek, any one of them would've been my favorite winner since DDL in There Will Be Blood). In general, I think the winners in the acting categories are all excellent and I'm happy with the Oscars despite a lackluster ceremony.

I don’t think I’d ever vote for a dead person unless I thought that they clearly deserved to win. But if it’s a close call, I’d probably use “being alive” as a tiebreaker. Why give an award to someone who can’t appreciate it - focus on the living, I say.

There's no way I'd vote Peter Finch in Network over DeNiro in Taxi Driver. And I actually prefer Eddie Marsan in Happy-Go-Lucky over Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.
But James Dean should have won for East of Eden, and he probably deserves another for Giant though I'd probably vote for Olivier's Richard III.

Speaking of people I would've voted for that weren't even nominated, Brad Pitt in Burn After Reading is probably my favorite supporting perf of that year

It's pretty wild. The show was eclipsing an average of 40 million viewers just seven years ago, and couldn't even muster a quarter of that figure last night. Granted there have been trends and forces at play in recent times the Academy had no control over, but they have to share a significant portion of the blame. I don't entirely agree with the Bill Maher segment mentioned upthread but I think it summarized things pretty accurately.

I can’t imagine any scenario outside of turning the show into the Adolescent’s Choice Awards that would make more than a marginal difference in ratings

Btw is this the first time the Globes correctly predicted only one acting winner? I know the Critic's Choice went 1/4 in 2001 and the last time SAG got both lead winners wrong was in 2002 (and despite the other precursors picking completely different choices, BAFTA got 4/4)

It's baffling that they managed to strip the broadcast down completely, removing montages, comedy skits, musical performances, nominee clips - even fastforwarding through the In Memorian segment - and yet the ceremony still ran 3 hours and 20 minutes.
3 hours and 20 minutes of winners being announced one after the other and nothing in between to try to make it the least entertaining.

I was thinking the same thing. But they also let winners talk as long as they wanted and took forever and 6 days with a lot of the nominee intros.
Basically it was a show emphasizing everything people effing hate about the Oscars.

They spent a lot of time getting "personal" with the nominees. Like, now the ticket counter at the AMC down the street can grasp the confidence to be the next Aaron Sorkin.
