i think a sticky dedicated screencaps thread would be a very good idea.

stickified!

As for screen caps, the problem is I can't sacrifice bandwidth by having images posted and hosted on this site. I don't mind a dedicated thread so people can post screen caps but they would have to link to images posted elsewhere (such as PhotoBucket or ImageShack or a nerd friend's web server or wherever), basically what everyone is doing right now.

I've got all the classic Godards - 1959-1967 [from overseas obviously]. I'm happy with the R2 2 OR 3 THINGS and would consider replacing it with a Criterion version only if it is loaded with extras [many can be found on the French edition]. My R2 version is quite good and has removable subs. What does an Aussie Godardian do with these new R4 releases? Does he or she buy them for yak tracks only? Are these commentaries worth it? I looked at VIVRE SA VIE at JB but was turned off by the $34 price tag. I went looking for the $19 PASSENGER but was dissapointed to find it "is out of stock and being re-ordered."

Just a tip for those about to search for the new special edition of The Elephant Man - don't bother. According to close sources, Universal has cancelled the release.

Aptly following on from the previous poster, ezydvd is listing Solaris (1972) for release on Nov 6 from Shock.

Ezydvd also list Essential Bergman - The Faith Trilogy for release on November 16 by Roadshow.

All the Madman Jarmusch films have lovely progressive film-PAL transfers (I own them all except Ghost Dog, as I already had the R1 and am happy with it). The foreign language captions on Mystery Train are removable player-generated ones in yellow w/ a black outline.

For those who don't have the films yet, there's a cheap five-pack of the 'Masterpiece' editions of Rope, Rear Window, Vertigo, Psycho and The Birds now available. Good value for $30. :)

Bloody hell! Do they all retain their documentaries? The R1 box, of course, has the Psycho and Birds docs on a seperate disc, so are the R4 editions bare bones now? Those docs are essential for fans.

And yeah, they all have their special features on there too. To quote;

Psycho:
-Documentary
-Trailers
-Shower scene with and without music
-Newsreel footage
-Production photographs
-Drawings

Rope
-Rope Unleashed: making-of
-Art Gallery
-Trailer Compilation
-Theatrical Trailer

Rear Window
-Read Window Ethics: Remembering & Restoring a Hitchcock Classic
-Featurette
-Art Gallery
-Trailer Compilation
Theatrical Trailer

The Birds
-All About The Birds-The Making Of
-Tippi Hendren's Screen Test
-Universal News Reel Stories (x 2)
-Theatrical Trailer
-Storyboard Sequence Deleted Scenes (script pages)
-Alternative Ending (sketches & storyboards)
-Production Photograph

Vertigo:
-Feature commentary.
-'Obsessed with Vertigo' documentary.
-Theatrical trailers
-Production notes
-Cast and Filmmakers

They're the exact discs from the Hitchcock Collection, only placed in a single case. In a word, bargain! :D

Roadshow are re-releasing Crash (Cronenberg) on 19 October, hopefully this time in its correct ratio.

(PLease Gordon correct me, and slap me down.)
No, there are no UK editions on the schedule. The improvements over the older older transfers can substantial - Rear Window's general texture is greatly improved, and , of course, Psycho and Vertigo are anamorphic and the latters' original mono track is provided. The awful pan and scan R2+4 editions need to be surplanted with these NOW.

I think Shock may be releasing Tarkovsky's whole catalogue, as Solaris, Ivan's Childhood and The Mirror have all been confirmed.

Knowing Shock, it will probably a port of Ruscico transfers rather than brand new transfers unless accessed from Criterion.

Despite which it doesn't appear on any etailer sites. Also according to Pepsi the disc reads copyright of "Universal Australasia". Dare one ring the haunted office to enquire? The Euro disc is certainly encoded Regions 2,4 and 5.

Has anyone scored a copy?

EDIT: I just have! For Sydney readers Borders Parramatta (and City) have it in stock - $19.95. Assuming it's the same transfer - I'll post something on it tonite.
I've just bought it - $19.95 AUD from a Borders store in Melbourne. They had heaps and it was on display so I'd say it's something of a featured release for them at the moment. Cover design is very tasteful, packaging reads anamorphic widescreen transfer... and features both Universal and Studio Canal logos. Leading me to believe this is going to be superb.

The upcoming Bergman boxset from Roadshow seems to be the same as the Criterion release including Ingmar Berman Makes A Movie and the same extras.

Solaris seems to be from an R2 release and not Criterion.

Does anybody know if the Australian R4 of "Spirits of the Dead" has the Fellini segment in English and Italian?

Image

If not, does any release anywhere in the world offer this segment in English and Italian? Thanks.

I have the original R4 release of Spirits of the Dead by Umbrella with this cover:

The audio is only French throughout the whole film (with English subtitles).
Not sure about the re-release.

On the HMV release, "Toby Dammit" (one of my favorite films) is only available in French, which is very awkward because 98% of the cast is Italian and it's set in Rome, so your R4 Italian track is very desireable.

So, is "Toby Dammit" entirely in Italian where Stamp is dubbed, or is it in Italian with Stamp speaking English (which is how it should be...but even if it is entirely in Italian, that's a huge step up from it being in French)?

Any other leads?

Sorry, I actually meant French not Italian.

All three segments are in French, including the titles.
Stamp speaks French in Toby Dammit, not sure if it's own voice or a dub.

Damn! I thought we had something for a moment. I suppose now that its been revealed that the R4 is the dreaded French track (and yeah, that's not Stamp's voice, not even in the scene where he's reciting Shakespeare in English!) it's time for a new thread.

The only place where I've seen any of this film in Italian/English is in the clips on the "Fellini: I'm a Born Liar" documentary...and of course it looks (sounds) spendid.
