I just learned Kino is releasing a favorite obscure film on blu-ray, in a 4k restoration––Ursula Purrer's Flaming Ears. For anybody who's a fan of queer cinema, or home-made-looking arthouse sci-fi, or just weird stuff like Jesus Shows You the Way to the Highway (though I'd say Flaming Ears is more consistently accessible and entertaining––no discredit to Jesus Highway), Flaming Ears is really cool. There're stop-motion-animated cityscapes, awkward, slow scenes of alienation, neediness, and disconnect, and a kind of pre-Fallen Angels saturated visual schema full of blown-out colors, soft magic-hour backgrounds, and intense, shiny, sweaty textures all over the place. It's a groovy flashback and maybe some of the more passionately-made, romantic and non-misogynist cyberpunk movie stuff to come out of the 90s. It's very kinky, and very charming.

Still, It'll be sad to retire my DVD of the picture––Ursula Purrer used to sell the disc on her website, in a really cool clear package, with very minimalist typography. I had that and a disc of Super 8 Girl Games and other short films in that same style. For some reason, I still haven't watched Super 8 Girl Games––Looks like most of what's on that disc will be included as extras on the Kino blu ray.

KL has announced that Cujo will be getting a 4K UHD release.

Beaver on The Bride Wore Black, to me looks way more naturalistic. TT seemed to have blown out contrast

As always, you have to ask how much of the difference is down to the Beaver's caps and how much is it due to the discs?

In this instance, Ambient Digital Media’s early Twilight Time discs (September 2014-February 2015’s releases) had mastered their discs in a similar (lower/brighter) “washed out” gamma that the majority of Kino’s older releases use to have.

I remember (was "Spetters" (P.Verhoeven) released by Kino ?) I had to set gamma to -3 to get a good picture; it's a bit sad because the transfer was really nice.

So basically, based on "La Mariée était en noir" this will be the same "digitally restored" transfer than the "hodge podge" French box set which combined old Twilight Time master (without the subtitles in-grained) and new restoration X4 (La Chambre Verte being really good).
I'm highly interested about "Adèle H." and "La Sirène du Mississippi" but I was expecting a new restoration. That's a bit sad.
At least, from what I have understood in the dvdbeaver test the subtitles on the Kino release are now optional, not in-grained or forced, that's it ?

That's the last UHD from the older MGM deal. Still 12 MGM from the newest deal and 2 Universal from that deal (both from the 2000s) to be announced.

We finally have a release date for this, as it will be released on May 30.

A pity it's not Herzog's version, but I'm happy for 99% of the film community that actually likes this film

I'm a fan of the Herzog one; but I could never get into the Ferrara original.

I’m so glad that I never bought this on Blu despite it being an all-time favorite. I don’t even think that revival theatrical screenings are legally allowed to have the Schoolly D song that caused so many problems (although that didn’t stop the New Beverly from showing it last year)

I gave it another try last year when I went through Ferrara's entire oeuvre, and even in that generous context where I came around on a lot of his films I had previously disliked, I really didn't get anything out of it. But this is a movie that seemingly everyone I know who's into film loves, so the joke's on me I guess

Herzog's film offers screen-chewing hysterics from Nicholas Cage and and a scene shot in Iguanacam. Ferrara's film only has Harvey Keitel in the nude. There's really no contest between them.
