Hopefully, Criterion will someday release the remainder of the Woodfall films that have never been released by BFI, specifically, a restored The Charge of the Light Brigade and…highly unlikely…Laughter in the Dark, neither of which have had a proper blu ray release.

Fuck's sake, Billy Friedkin. Hopefully KL or someone else will consider Bug again when the trillionth release of Exorcist and the 4k of To Live and Die in LA have been dealt with.

Can’t believe Criterion somehow let the 4K rights for Night of the Hunter go to Kino Lorber. The deal must have been made before Criterion had committed to the format.

Kino seemed to confirm this theory, but then quickly walked it back, but they most likely had licensed so much from MGM that MGM let them cherry pick some UHD rights. (The rights should have been offered to the current licensee first.)

He is knee-deep in pre-production for his first new feature in years, so that might be part of the reason why he can’t sign off on it, but I do wish he would just let his DP or editor do it instead

People have been waiting forever to get this on blu let alone 4K, I have to imagine whoever scoops this up next will be more patient and strategic about its release. Not surprised KL dropped the ball though, they’re so insanely busy and disorganized it seems like the only label that could have let this slip through the cracks

Yes! My dream release - and I may have conjured this one, since I happened to revisit it just last night for the nth time. Also, for Boston area natives, this is probably the most authentic use of its location, with some blunt site signifiers (i.e. Quincy market) but even more that are only recognizable by those familiar with the architecture and look of a neighborhood (i.e. Beacon Hill) even 40something years later. My partner basically spent the whole movie pointing out where each scene was shot

This applies to Universal's own Blu-ray release too (which came out after MoC issued theirs) but the detail on both the Kino and Universal Blu-ray is a touch crisper and sharper than the MoC Blu-ray, and it doesn't appear to be artificially sharpened, just a better transfer. In fairness, while it's visible if you compare it side-by-side, it's small enough that I think most people wouldn't realize the MoC was a touch softer as they were watching it. But I guess it's a moot point when you consider Kino's UHD - that's going to look better all around.

Quite a few people still hold on to the MoC for the academy ratio/open matte presentations, but personally, I have to go with the widescreen presentations.

I doubt that. The Silence of the Lambs is a singular case in Kino’s MGM output. In other words, I doubt Criterion has any excuse letting go of the 4k transfers of The Killing, Paths of Glory, The Great Escape, etc.

I doubt that. The Silence of the Lambs is a singular case in Kino’s MGM output. In other words, I doubt Criterion has any excuse letting go of the 4k transfers of The Killing, Paths of Glory, The Great Escape, etc.

I think the simplest explanation is the correct one - these were part of a deal between MGM and Kino from before Criterion committed to UHD releases, and Kino jumped at the chance when made available.

Kino has made another deal with MGM. Here's some details as stated by the KL Insider:

The new MGM deal includes renewals of Burnt Offerings, F/X, F/X2, House of the Long Shadows, Lilies of the Field, Malone, Support Your Local Sheriff & Gunfighter.

We also re-acquired the Blu-ray rights to 6 titles from our first deal and 3 from our second deal, the deal two titles includes the previously announced Cherry 2000 and Miracle Mile. 4 of these titles, including the 2 De Jarnatt titles will receive new 2K or 4K masters.

We picked up 4 titles previously released by Olive Films, 1 previously released by MGM and 1 by ClassicFlix.

As far new acquisitions are concerned, we picked up two 4K titles, one we’ve previously released on Blu-ray, the other was previously released on Blu-ray by MGM.

We picked up 3 more Noir titles, which will be released as part of Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema XVII. All 3 are new on Blu-ray.

We also picked up 5 other titles (first time on Blu-ray), 4 of those were titles the late Bill Olsen (Code Red) was interested in, the last one will be Scorpion/KL co-release. As far the 4 Bill Olsen titles are concerned, they will either be KL Studio Classics releases or Scorpion/KL ones.

The HTF posting says new 4k scan for Manchurian Candidate. Probably the same that Criterion's BD is sourced from. And a lot of people will be happy to see Ronin on there. It was a long wait.
