Precisely: The discs are pressed professionally (as regular discs).

For the subs on Les yeux sans visage (and the other new ones, including Un condamné à mort which has finally been released), I've asked the question on a French forum where some people already bought the discs. I'll post the answer here.

Just watched 2 men in Manhattan, it looked great despite the Gaumont disclaimer that the film hasn't been restored, and I actually found Melville's acting decent.

Re A Man Escaped - is there any definite word yet on whether the Blu-ray is region free?

Thanks.

I don't know whether it was my copy or if others might of experienced the same problem, but after an hour and thirty-four minutes my copy of French cancan jammed!(and only started again after four minutes of pressing fast-forward and then play, four minutes of the film was reduced to a series of judders)

Early bird chirping on upcoming 2011 titles included Rififi on blu, some Autant-Lara on blu as well as Beau Serge and Les Cousins from Uncle Claude which will probably auger well for the Criterion counterparts. Godard fans will also note the Politics box set slated for October. Unfortunately it looks like Clouzot's Assassin has fallen off the slate.

The new Gaumonts are likely to be english-friendly again so as long as they haven't fouled up the black levels and shadow details as they have with their A Man Escaped Blu, I'll be getting Rififi - anyone think it likely that Criterion would add any new extras to a Blu upgrade?

I'm sure they will add new extras. Rififi is one of their signature titles, and Dassin is now one of their pet directors, yet the disc is very slim on supplements. It's just a question of when Criterion will upgrade.

Be aware that the inclusion of the 2 Chabrol has been done thanks to a deal with Criterion.
So, it indeed auger a Criterion counterpart.

Any news/reviews of Losey's Don Giovanni and Rosi's Carmen?

Carmen: ecranlarge.com - filmsactu.com

Don Giovanni: ecranlarge.com

Both are extremely good, though the Full DTS 96/24 found on the previous Don Giovanni DVD makes the HD upgrade of Don Giovanni less interesting for the sound part.

Are there also English subs on the Carmen making-of doc or just the film?

Looking to the previous releases from the collection, I would say only on the movie, but I don't the title, so I'm not 100% sure.

Ann Harding wrote:Regarding Gaumont, they are also launching DVD on Demand. A list of more obscure classics are coming out on October 4th. (BTW they all have the HoH subs logo  ). Click here.
I noticed Le Val d'Enfer (1943, Maurice Tourneur), Le Dernier des Six (1941, G. Lacombe) a fine comedy-thriller with a witty script by Henri-Georges Clouzot and Les Belles de Nuit (1952, R. Clair).
The second wave has been released for a while now and these are now being made available via Amazon whose shipping may aid overseas buyers.

They are promising a third wave in 2011 which will take in suggestions by e-mail. Now is the chance to agitate for all those Epsteins, Franju documentaries and Raymond Bernard titles. Feast your eyes on the titles under 'tous les films' arranged chronologically. Don't forget to vote! Who knows that elusive Miracle des Loups or Finis Terrae may be up for grabs sooner rather than later.
