Mr. Ned wrote:This really looks fantastic, and has the potential to usurp the title of most anticipated blockbuster from Nolan's Rises this summer. There are a couple elements that give me trepidation, though.
First, the cross-cultural message about the extra-terrestrials found in glyphs/symbols, which presumes some sort of holistic theory of origin for human culture. This whole bit has staggering similarities to Dan O'Bannon's first script for Alien, which included a pyramid structure fraught with glyphs and vases, not unlike those scene in the derelict craft in the trailer. AvP gleaned some of these elements from O'Bannon's original ideas, but I expect Scott will not even acknowledge that film. It appears these "higher" beings have some control over biological growth and the creation of life forms -- and there's a lot potential to intertwine these issues with Alien in an oblique and indirect way. The significance of Prometheus doesn't seem lost on Scott at all.
The set design, cast, etc. looks great, but I hope the film doesn't get clouded by blockbuster aesthetics: rousing Wagnerian soundtracks, too much CGI, etc. It's hard to discern what the film will cater to. Right now, it appears as if it's an Alien/Aliens hybrid with 21st century techniques; and that has great potential -- to be excellent or very disappointing.
I'm encouraged by this bit from an interview linked earlier:
Beaks: What's exciting about Prometheus to me is that it feels, on one level, like you're using the bait of Alien to bring people into a smart science-fiction film they might otherwise avoid if they didn't suspect it was connected to a popular franchise.
Sir Ridley Scott: That's a good way of putting it.
Lindelof: It's feels a little more manipulative than we would put it probably, but it's not the most unfair characterization.
Scott: The very loose target was that nineteen months ago. Then what happened was you get an idea, which is the starting spec, and the evolution occurs. It just moved further and further away from that original thought that you specified. It has nothing to do with that now. It begs much larger, more interesting questions.
If it's as intelligent as it's being touted by Ridley and Damon here, I suspect it'll be as perfect a melding of summer blockbuster with very smart science-fiction ideas and concepts that in part have roots in what came before with
Alien, but also explore ideas and concepts more at home with more cerebral fare like
2001 and
Solaris.

Scott's been emphasizing how different this film is for months now, but it's amazing to see so many elsewhere who are still focused on how the film is connected to the first Alien movie. Personally, I had no interest when this project was announced. I think the first Alien was a fine movie, but the idea of a big-budget prequel had no appeal to me, less so when I saw the teaser (which consisted of action shots and not much else). I only became interested when I came across Scott's comments on how this picture evolved. I've actually thought the same thing - could this be a film more along the lines of 2001 or even Solaris? - but I don't want to get too carried away with that notion, it's still very much a commercial enterprise. But it's still very promising - after all these years, the director of Blade Runner making another sci-fi action film with loftier ambitions.

I think it helps knowing Scott has a strong relationship with Fox, that he might have sufficient enough support from them to pull something like this off.

So far it looks like Charlize's character might be the Paul Reiser of the film, the company person instructed to bring back whatever life form at the cost of the crew. But in so much as she might be Reiser's character it also reflects Ash from Alien so I wouldn't put it past Ridley Scott-etc to put two androids in this film...

When he was on Top Gear, Clarkson made sure to reference how popular his helmet was...in X-Men.

Being a sucker for consistency I'd only accept that state of affairs if Fincher were allowed to make a follow up film which immediately nullified Cameron's prequel-sequel!

And of course is the best of the four.

And then Jeunet can come and make a totally ridiculous, semi-relevant entry that is nonetheless immense fun. Hell, I'd be on board.

The real question is, how is this all going to tie in with the Predator universe 25 years from now?

UPDATE: Insiders at the studio tell me that James Cameron might have made a slightly humorous off handed comment about a Prometheus sequel on the red carpet, but it’s not true he’s planning a Prometheus sequel; this falls into the April Fool’s category as I surmised in the original post. He’s too busy with Avatar sequels to consider anything else. Some Deadline commenters said the entire Guardian piece was based on a hoax story. What fun.
So no Prometheuses, huh?

I know his head is pretty far up his own ass but I'm still surprised people bought the story in the first place

The marketing campaign is running the risk of being far more interesting than the movie itself.

From what I read early on, there is a sequel being written.

Interview with Ridley for the new Nerdist YouTube channel. Talks about storyboarding, and possibly going back into
Blade Runner territory.

The Cameo cinema in Edinburgh is taking early orders for Prometheus and they have listed the film with a 15 rating though it doesn't appear to have been rated by the BBFC yet.

I'm going to see it either way, but I'm hoping for an R. Hollywood (and Fox particularly, for the first AVP movie and the last Die Hard installment) has pushed PG-13 as far as it can go, almost making the argument that they're treating R as if it's the new NC-17 now. The demographic the film seemingly has been designed for is the booming "nerd" culture that's been rising to the surface in the last few years, roughly people in their 20's.
