3. Amour (Michael Haneke, France/Germany/Austria)
4. Holy Motors (Leos Carax, France/Germany)
5. Beasts of the Southern Wild (Benh Zeitlin, USA)
= Berberian Sound Studio (Peter Strickland, UK/Germany)
7. Moonrise Kingdom (Wes Anderson, USA)
8. Beyond the Hills (Christian Mungiu, Romania/France/Belgium)

= This is Not A Film (Jafar Pahani & Mojtaba Mirtahmaseb, Iran)
The annotations in the articles are worth a look. This year was the most difficult I’ve ever had to pick ten favorite films, let alone to rank them one to ten. 2012 was, on balance, an excellent year, but I wouldn’t call any of its movies “masterpieces.” I confess that it was down to the wire for me in choosing a “best film,” and I’d prefer to have gone with both Zero Dark Thirty and Lincoln.

David Lean won Best Director for consecutive films: The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia, both of which also won Best Picture.Professor Wagstaff wrote:Perhaps a more knowledgeable (or less lazy than myself) Oscar aficionado can clarify this for me: would wins for Kathryn Bigelow or Tom Hooper as best director mark the first time a filmmaker would win the prize for consecutive movies in their filmography? How about directing consecutive best picture winners in their filmography?
I know John Ford and Joe Mankiewicz both won best director two years in a row, but each man had other films released in between their award-winning projects.
