They thought the movie was great and collectively polled it better than those? Crazy idea I know, especially for a film with so many passionate fans, but that's how it goes.

It's the Lee Daniels effect. Don't be surprised to see that happen when the Oscar nods come out, too. Folks who vote for these awards in Hollywood are far more taken with his films than critics, and possibly even the public.

Hopefully it'll be like the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel last year and stop there

Or like noms for Nicole Kidman in The Paperboy (another Daniels head-scratcher). I just feel bad for Oscar Isaac in all this mess, as he deserves to be nominated over even Redford and likely won't be in this crowded Best Actor field.

Hope no one minds me quoting In Contention again, but here are their top 10 in order of probability of being nominated in the Best Actor category of the Oscars this year:

01. Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave
02. Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
03. Bruce Dern, Nebraska
04. Robert Redford, All is Lost
05. Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips
06. Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street
07. Forest Whitaker, Lee Daniels' The Butler
08. Oscar Isaac, Inside Llewyn Davis
09. Michael B. Jordan, Fruitvale Station
10. Christian Bale, American Hustle

Just the role itself should raise him crazy though. Look to Michael Stuhlbarg as the probable model of career.

Oh, absolutely. But will he ever give a performance as worthy of an Oscar nomination as this one? Sure, he may get a nomination or even a win in the future, but this is one of those performances in one of those movies, and it's a shame that it'll go unrecognized.

In the words of Eastwood, "deserves got nothing to do with it" (sadly).

In a funny bit of irony (using that loosely since it's a friendly competition we're talking about and it's not like Redford was up for it), if Isaac is snubbed by Redford in this category, he's still got the male lead in the next J.C. Chandor film locked down already.

I don't think McConaughey is a sure thing: the Academy apparently hates him and might deny him even for a widely acclaimed role like this. I'd bet the five will be Dern, DiCaprio, Ejiofer, Hanks, and Redford.

Although, wasn't last year his snub year? In other words, he's had so many great performances in high profile, excellent films over the last 2 or 3 years, they can't keep ignoring them, can they? Especially if they're going to recognize Leto with a nomination in Supporting Actor?

Leto is a lock either way-- see the Mare Winingham Supporting nod / Jennifer Jason Leigh lead snub for Georgia in '95

Oscar can't ignore big stars for too long, though - Leigh was never an A-list celebrity even during that incredibly fruitful stretch. We'll see how it pans out, of course. I just don't see Leto getting nominated and McConaughey being snubbed for that particular film on this particular year. Maybe if Mud hadn't come out this year and Magic Mike and Killer Joe hadn't come out last year. But they did, and I think the buzz about McConaughey's resurgence has finally reached even the stodgiest Academy members by now.

And of course, as evidenced with a few notable snubs including Django Unchained last year, they're not exactly choked up with DiCaprio enough to bump him up above McConaughey in the running unless that film is really a juggernaut.

Then there's the Phoenix factor - do they nominate him just to troll the guy? Should be a fun awards season to watch unfold.

I could see DiCaprio not making it, but I think it'd then go to Michael B Jordan thanks to the Weinsteins and the surprisingly strong showing for Fruitvale Station or Isaac. Hell, maybe even Hanks or Dern get bumped too. Ejiofer is the only true blue sure thing

Sounds about right to me. The Weinsteins own the world and seem to have placed all of their eggs in two baskets while 12 Years a Slave has everyone eating out of its hands. Beyond that it seems there are a lot of maybes.

Funnily enough I think Wooderson will not just be nominated, but has a great shot at winning the whole thing. Ejiofor's buzz has faded a bit, Redford and Dern will cancel each other out in the Senior Citizen vote, DiCaprio is good but not great in Wolf and plays an irredeemable asshole, Hanks has already won too many times, and Forest Whitaker should thank his lucky stars he was even invited after that Butler atrocity.

Plus McConaughey did the all-important physical transformation thing, his character is a redeemable asshole who died of AIDS, had another couple of great smaller roles this year in Mud and Wolf (in which he completely steals his few scenes away from Leo), and has done a huge turnaround in his public perception from consistently stoned-and-naked waste of talent to hard-working, concentrated thespian. All very Academy friendly.

I'd love to be wrong about McConaughey. Tomorrow's the Golden Globe noms and then we get the DGA nominees in January, so pretty soon it'll be time to throw down with official Oscar predix in all the major categories

Wow, maybe the first time the comedy film noms are better than the drama, course I doubt any of the filmmakers in the comedy category would define their films as such.

Any time someone's worst list is a bunch of things that nobody's going to leap to defend topped by a critical darling, I'm immediately going to assume they're just baiting rather than expressing a sincere opinion- particularly when the defense for the ranking is one that one could have made without bothering to watch the movie.

The best list is click-bait-y, too. I liked You're Next! quite a bit, but the third best film of the year?
