Quite frankly I'm a bit surprised to see Grand Budapest not even make the shortlist. I thought it a stretch but I find it hard to believe that anybody seriously finds the work being done in Night at the Museum more impressive than that which Anderson does.

I guess it's just the first of many snubs to come for the film, though. I'm still holding on to the vain hope it'll end up with some nominations for Picture and Actor but I do acknowledge they have absolutely zero chance whatsoever of actually winning anything short of Production Design.

That said this particular award is Interstellar's to lose and it has been since Interstellar was announced.

I expect noms for screenplay, costumes, production design, and possibly makeup. It has a shot at a best picture nom if there are nine or ten nominees. I suppose it's a verrrrrry remote possibility for director if it gets a lot of precursor and critical support. Unfortunately, I think the field of actors is way too deep this year for Fiennes to have any kind of shot.

I think Fiennes does have a shot, but it is a very, very small one, given that even Timothy Spall has a chance of going without a nomination and he was an early favorite. I think he's more likely than Bradley Cooper or Jake Gylenhaal (both of which GoldDerby place as more likely than Fiennes), but a lot of it does depend on the kind of narrative/campaign they put out for it. I think given Fox Searchlight has Birdman already deep in the Best Actor race that there's a very good chance they don't even try to push for it.

I do think it'll be a year with ten nominees, though. There's quite a lot of "just on the edge" nomination films this year (Whiplash/Turner/Wild/etc.) and given they're all generally of high quality I'd love to see some recognition by letting as many be nominated as possible. I have no actual basis for this argument other than hope and faith in the Academy Awards system, which is most likely in vain.

The only category with a glut of potential strong nominees is Best Actor and Fiennes is not even in the top ten of possibilities. He should make it on merit alone but that's not how it works

Eh? Awardsseason and Goldderby both have him listed at Eighth. I *can* see a situation where both Bradley Cooper and Oscar Isaac fall out of contention due to their films not getting traction once they're properly released (albeit highly unlikely this would happen to both of them), but that would still most likely resuly in a bump for Spall rather than for Fiennes. Again, I don't think it will happen but I really do think it could.

There is no narrative short of a basic "this film came out in March and its still being talked about come awards season" so yes it also has that working against it.

Grand Budapest was primarily financed American and for all intents and purposes is (though that didn't help disqualify Slumdog Millionaire a few years ago.

Wiki says this:

The film is a British-German co-production that was financed by German financial companies and film-funding organisations.

It was still eligible, it just wasn't nommed

Not sure if they were ineligible, but plenty of glaring omissions in my book: Ralph Fiennes for The Grand Budapest Hotel, Timothy Spall for Mr. Turner, Marion Cotillard for The Immigrant and Two Days, One Night and Tilda Swinton deserves something for her marvelous appearances in three films that were released this year in the U.S. Selma apparently has an excellent ensemble, but it wasn't finished in time for the SAG nomination process.

Nothing too surprising.

Good early signs for a poor showing for American Sniper come Oscar time, which I've been banking on in the hope it's prospective place will be taken by one of the films just a little bit behind it.

It is very unexpected to see Jolie have not been nominated, but I think that's pretty much it. Everything else seems about right.

I was glad to see lots of love for Grand Budapest Hotel. The Globes might have been expected, due to the comedy / drama split, but with the SAGs as well I'm hoping they carry through (especially Fiennes) to the Oscars.

Fiennes is a longshot. Aside from the screenplay and production design, I actually think the most likely thing we'll see is it squeaking by with a Best Picture nomination, actually.

It over performed at the Globes, so I'm ready to predict it for a Best Pic nom, but Fiennes still isn't happening

Hmmm, Gone Girl gets director, actress, screenplay and score noms but not a Best Pic nom.

Also Ava DuVernay becomes first black female director to get a Globe nom, here's hoping she gets an Oscar one too.
