This release has every earmark of being a contractual fulfillment made on a promise to distro and release the film before they actually saw it. Once it was clear what they bought rights to, they quietly buried it with as little additional financial expenditure as possible

I'm sure that's true, but I'm curious as to what sort of contract that could be since this doesn't seem to be connected to any other film they have or will be releasing. Why go into such a contract if you are going to only get this unknown film out of it?

Some world famous Pop artist wants to make a movie and have you distribute it? You'd say no?

Hadn't heard of Jellyfish Eyes. The reviews are less than stellar. Maybe the worst I have seen from a CC release. Reading this thread doesn't give it much promise.

Knives, as CSM says, I don't think it's tied to anything other than someone in acquisitions or higher up being a fan of the artist and wanting to get behind their first feature, only to be stuck with this end product

So we're all agreed that this is the one movie that we don't have to have seen to have an opinion about, right?

I've made no claims on it being a bad film, only that it has all appearances of being one. It may indeed be a wonderful film, but I doubt I'll ever find out. And I'm okay with that.

I'd ask to see the film first. Also if that's the case why not at least go big on the extras like they just did on the Dylan film?

There are currently five reviews collected on Metacritic. Slant liked it, nobody else did.

Wait, did they seriously not include an English dub? Of course I still haven't seen it, but there seems to be the suggestion from what I've read it might appeal to children, so that exclusion seems pretty odd.

Ha, good point. They really should have gotten Lena Dunham to contribute a celebrity voiceover at the very least. Just saw the trailer for this, and I don't know what to make of it. It looks like a completely earnest effort to make a Pokemon fan-fiction movie with a Sharknado budget. Like with nothing particularly "meta" about it. I must be missing something.

His Art was what helped convince me that I'd already seen enough Murakami for a lifetime (after seeing and disliking several other things, including scenes from Jellyfish Eyes), in particular "My Lonesome Cowboy," an ugly fiberglass/acrylic statue of a typically boring/undistinguished manga/anime design, save for the fact that he's ejaculating a big jizz lasso. Millions of dollars for this, on the basis of celebrity and perceived "value." And it wasn't just that but many similar pieces, which Murakami's comments only make worse for their pretense. So yes, please, art-world superstar, tell me more about these timely post-Fukushima messages you have for us and our children, I'm so fascinated by your world view.

You want to see a really good Fukushima-related movie, seek out Toshi Fujiwara's No Man's Zone (a documentary). I guess I can pass on this "confection".

The sarcasm in this thread is far less entertaining than this rather delightful movie. There are different kinds of films for different audiences. Anybody who enjoys contemporary anime (especially TV comedy anime series) and anybody with a genuine love of kaiju would do well to pick this up. I strongly suspect the people posting in this thread do not fit comfortably into either of those categories.

I rather enjoy anime and know many do here, but everything about this film suggests it stands small next to that inspiration. What here wasn't done better in Godzilla, Digimon, or the work of MOHIRO Kitoh? Even stylistically there's nothing here suggesting Miike or the like. It could be good, but nothing suggests interesting.

Am I the only one who had never heard of this movie and (had it been a quiet release) would have ignored it but now am tempted to buy it just from all the negative attention it is getting on these forums? You know what they say about bad publicity...

This is really a prime of Streisand Effect. Now I HAVE to pick it up to see what all this fuss is about.

i'm kind of baffled by animosity towards a film that most of you haven't seen. is it based on a general distaste for murakami's work?
