I hope it wasn't a first date.

I got a somewhat similar reaction when I took someone to see
Spoiler
Punch-Drunk Love
"That's why I don't like movies."

I realised that a relationship probably wasn’t going to take off when she complained about the swearing in Do the Right Thing. And it duly didn’t.

Nekromantik 2 as a first date film two or three years later, though, was a roaring success. Although we both had some idea of what we were in for!

Although the most successful first-date film of my life was Lukas Moodysson’s Together, as I married the date in question and we’re still together nearly 25 years later.

(Oh, and Audition wasn’t a first date film.)

I assume you both got quickly married soon after

We did not, as she was married already.

(Albeit very separated, and I never met him. Come to think of it, I never saw any evidence that he was actually alive…)

If we’re doing excruciating date movies, let me mention WKW’s Fallen Angels (extensive masturbation) and Cronenberg’s Crash (most of it, but peaking at the leg-penetration scene).

I have always considered Irreversible or Salo to be the worst (or best if you’re unhinged and have an ulterior motive for testing a prospective partner) date film.

Those two happen to be the only other films that had a similar effect to Audition on me, and out of the three, the Miike is the only one I'll voluntarily rewatch. Unlike Irreversible, Salo didn't make me angry, just utterly depressed.

Both huge hits with the same girlfriend that I saw Audition with.

But you’ve just reminded me of the time when my wife saw The Shape of Water on a Transatlantic flight, loved it, thought that our then 14-year-old son would love it too, and so instructed me to arrange a screening. Which I did…

…at which point she belatedly discovered that the version that she watched had snipped out all the scenes of, um, Sally Hawkins taking matters into her own hands.

The awkward bit wasn’t what you might have expected, it was explaining that her “whoa!” reaction was one of surprise rather than alarm or disgust, as she’s normally very keen indeed on female self-empowerment; it’s just that she wasn’t expecting to encounter it in a film that she thought she’d already seen.

No. Although I suspect she'd be pretty unfazed by it.

I've already mentioned this story somewhere, but without warning my ex-girlfriend bolted out of the theatre at the climax of Uncut Gems leaving my heart racing even harder than it would've if I wasn't also thinking about what kind of anger awaited me outside the theatre. I stayed in my seat throughout the credits both bracing myself and taking in all that just happened

I agreed to see Twins with a girl if we first went to see Dead Ringers.

I still have not seen Twins.

Ironically, Twins was the working title of Dead Ringers, but David Cronenberg agreed to change it at the request of his former producer Ivan Reitman.
