Wow. I'll believe it when I see it. Has there ever been an actor retire when he/she was still at the top of his/her game?

Gene Hackman, last film notwithstanding

Greta Garbo? I feel like a fair number of golden age actresses did.

Does DDL consider this to be being active?

Brigitte Lin. All the more dramatic as she was only 40.

Garbo is a good one. For many of those Golden Age actresses it was more of a forced retirement because of age and a lack of parts.

Hackman was kind of past his prime though, right?

I could see DDL maybe doing a limited run stage production.

Dunno about top of her game, but Bridget Fonda wasn't forty when she made her last film.

Like Rick Moranis, I believe she completely dropped out of Hollywood to spend more time with her kids

Besides Garbo, Grace Kelly at 26, Louise Brooks at 31, Clara Bow at 28, Theda Bara at 34, Shirley Temple at 21, Brigitte Helm at 26, Setsuko Hara at 42.

I don't think Maria Falconetti retired from acting in general, but she made so few films - did she choose not to do anymore after Joan of Arc? That alone would be huge, that performance is arguably the greatest in all of film history.

Also Cary Grant and James Cagney retired when they were still great - the latter came back decades later, but from what I can recall he was a shadow of his former self (possibly due to illness).

No but FrauBlucher just asked about retirement - if Hollywood was a better place, most retirements in the film acting community would be voluntary.

This really feels like a "Where did these young-ish actors disappear to? (Answer: they got married and/or had kids)" thread split, but while I don't think she ever entirely quit acting (she turns up in small supporting roles in Todd Haynes' Safe and Anthony Minghella's Mr Wonderful in the 90s, and in a small but significant role in Minority Report), Jessica Harper kind of disappeared in the late 1980s. Although as Kim Newman mentioned in the commentary track to Suspiria, when you marry the chairman who has run a number of major Hollywood studios over the decades, you might be able to relax a little on the career front!

Jessica Harper is actually coming out of (apparent) retirement to play a role in Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria remake!

Well in that case it certainly won't be playing where I live. I haven't read Fifty shades of Gray but I once read an excerpt in an online article. I won't repeat the section entirely but it was the least sexy paragraph about buttholes imaginable. I imagine anything Anderson cooks up will be considerably better than something that started as Twilight fan fiction.

And of course one final performance from Daniel Day-Lewis to relish.

This is kinda random but anytime PTA pops up in my feed or here I think of Philip Seymour Hoffman. How wonderful it could’ve been to see him and DDL on the screen together.

From Variety's Oscar Season preview:

Plot details have been scarce but back-channel gossip makes it sound like a Mike Leigh sort of experience, with a dollop of “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Make of that what you will.

That almost makes it sound like a Peter Greenaway film.

The picture is now locked, but apparently PTA hasn't come up with a title he likes and they're considering going back to Phantom Thread.

This Vulture piece on Oscar chances makes brief mention of the film being locked in the bit on Lesley Manville for supporting actress.

Yeah, that was my source, FWIW. I just found the amusingness of the on-again-off-again title to be particularly noteworthy.
