Looked great in initial shots. Actual photos are cheap cheap cheap. May aliens descend on FOX and burn them alive for such bad packaging.

That egg could be gorgeously constructed, but it doesn't change the fact that the presentation and packaging of the discs is insulting.

Obviously there must be a market for these plastic monstrosities, but are there really people who display these gimmick packages like objets d'art around their living rooms?

Sadly there are. I remember about two years ago reading an article complaining about US treatment of its movies compared with Japan and they took the Japanese Alien head package as one of the prime examples.

Alien head is the best package ever. I still wake up from dreams where I bought it. Coming into my living room and realizing it's not there, and was just a dream, hurts deep in my soul.

The simple edition is $60 only, almost 40% cheaper than its American counterpart.

Or does it turn on when you open the hatch? Either case, I'll pass but I want to know how annoying it will be before I suggest it to anybody I know.

Imagine there'll be quite a few people importing this to the US. How are Fox going to explain this price gap to their US customers? (Answer: they aren't even going to try!)

Keep in mind they region lock their releases, so the number of importers won't be as high as you might think!

In any case I'm hoping we won't have to wait for another 6 months for the individual releases. Not paying £40 (or even £30 when the inevitable discount kicks in) for a set out of which I only love the first film, and Resurrection isn't ever going to occupy space on my shelves! I've now seen the assembly edit of Alien 3 and I agree with Roger that it's still not a genuinely good film but the additions elevate it from being deeply flawed to above average. It's now on a par with Cameron's which always struck me as too mucho and in your face after the elegance of the original.

By the time the individual releases come out, the set will cost £18 so paying £6 more for 4 films plus 60 hours of (set exclusive?) extras sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
This reminds me of buying the Matrix blu-ray boxset for £12 and change when i could have only the first film for £8. I simply can't resist

I'm glad you were able to see the extended version of ALIEN 3 relatively quickly (and without having to buy a box set!).

There's something appealing about this series I can't quite put my finger on. Like Mr. Finch, I really only love the first film, but I've surprised myself with how often I've gone back and watched all four films. I guess there are aspects of each that are just right: Henrikson's and Paxton's performances in ALIENS along with the design of the Alien Queen, Dance's performance in ALIEN 3 combined with Fincher's dour vision and...well, maybe it's just that clone room scene in RESURRECTION. I'm not certain I'm going to rush out and buy the (higher-priced U.S.) blu-ray set when released, but I suspect it will be added to my collection at some point.

Potentially interesting tidbit about the Aliens blu-ray transfer from Blu-ray.com:

"We went in and completely de-noised it, de-grained it, up-rezzed, color-corrected every frame, and it looks amazing." - James Cameron

Looks like there'll be some heavy-handed DNR.

What does he mean by 'up-rezzed'? Did they take a low resolution transfer and somehow enhance it to a higher resolution?

His staunchest defenders don't know what colour correction is.

There's no question that ALIENS was the "grainiest" film of the series, but this sounds like Cameron has fallen in love with his digital tools and bypassed common sense. The digital transfer used for the 2003 reissue was already four or five years old at the time and looked it; hopefully he didn't go back to that transfer and "up-rezzed" it. Also, why would he deliberately state that only the "director's cut" version was remastered; he's not going to allow the 1997-98 transfer of the theatrical cut to go on the Blu-ray, is he?!
