This is a pretty big stretch, but if the tree is a "Green Tree" and the "S" is beneath the tree, it could be a "Green Tree Over S" (Flavour of Green Tea Over Rice).

The singing guy could be Harold Lloyd? Maybe just referring to The Kid Brother, but since he's singing, maybe also that set of Lloyd's sound films?

I'm not obsessive as some of the other folks here, but didn't they hint at the Koker Trilogy at least once before in a New Year's or other clue? my sense was that the project had been delayed by a broader effort to restore all of Kiarostami's films, that began after his death.

I think it was the 2015 drawing, which featured an unfinished/destroyed bridge people thought were referencing an earthquake, and a car. In other words, it was a fairly weak hint.

The sled looks to be made of sugar cane. If that's true it's probably exactly what it sounds like. Citizen Kane.

That or it's Spike Lee's Bamboozled.

I'd just like to say the idea of the two guys being a quadruple clue for "Bringing Up Children of the One Euro-Pa Singing, The Other Doesn't" seems more than modestly unlikely.

Why would Criterion release Citizen Kane? There is nothing more they can add to that release.

I mean, I thought the same about Dr. Strangelove and they still did but still. Citizen Kane is probably one of those big Warner titles that’ll be on 4K soon.

I’m not sure whether it is or isn’t but the idea of Kane getting released by Criterion has to be a challenge for them. The WB release is packed to the gills. But I’m sure CC would love to give it a go.

Would it even be possible for Criterion to also acquire RKO 281 and The Battle Over Citizen Kane and carry them over?

My guess would also be that a Citizen Kane Spine 1000 would feature a copious amount of general Criterion retrospective material, assorted things put online and on Filmstruck about the history of the company and its importance and all that. All very self-satisfying but it’s an itch Criterion’s never really scratched on any release yet ands seems to me somewhat inevitable.

I thought it was pretty evident (after the fact) the bridge was a direct, strong hint for _The Bridge_?

I have to admit I also immediately thought the coke bottles were one two three.

I am happy I managed to come up with swing time, and an angel at my table before coming here, I’m usually terrible at New Years clues.

Since Scarlett empress was the only hint for the big Dietrich set last year, I’m hopeful that swing time might indicate a larger set of Astaire Rogers films.

Is it just me or does the big tree resemble the tree on the old taste of cherry dvd? If so would that “big tree” mean a “big set” of kiarostami?

Does the coin next to the middle coke bottle mean anything or is it that just a bottle cap?

Do the Chessmen in front of Jesus and the angel mean anything? They don’t match to the “life” esque game board they are playing.

Might be. I just looked and see that Criterion has stopped selling the old DVD.

Warner's edition has the excellent Ebert and Bogdanovich commentaries, but other than The Battle Over Citizen Kane... there's only a minute of premire footage, less than ten minutes of interviews, production gallery with Ebert commentary (15 min), a post-production gallery (5 min), and the unrestored trailer.

Criterion could add:

Third commentary with Jonathan Rosenbaum
Craig Barron/Ben Burtt piece on the special effects and sound design (this would be enough to get me to rebuy)
Simon Callow interview
Piece on Gregg Toland and his work on the film
Piece on Bernard Herrmann's Mercury work and his score for Kane
Piece on Robert Wise and the editing
Piece on the Mercury Theatre and the actors
Piece on Herman J. Mankiewicz and the evolution of the screenplay

Also could be conceivable that The Eyes of Orson Welles could be included
