Quick question : I'm getting stuck on that teaser poster, whose Joker's stance definitely reminds me of another movie's poster, but I can't find which one. Would anybody have a better memory than I have ? (or maybe that's just me)

Dead & Buried maybe? It even matches the color scheme.

cdnchris wrote: Wed Apr 03, 2019 3:50 pmBut I agree with mfunk it does look like the type of thing (based solely on the trailer) the Incels will latch onto for all of the wrong reasons.
The Joker is already an ironic symbol for "oppressed gamers" around the world, so that's not too far-fetched. See: this hellhole.

Anyways, the movie has potential; hopefully they don't go back on their "standalone" claim, though.

I’m looking at the All Time top posts for that subreddit and I’m pretty sure that whole sub is a self-aware joke at the expense of those Joker-loving edgelord/incel types

The rules list on the side includes this one:
7. KEEP YOUR GAMEFACE ON. Comments from any users who fail to do so may be removed at mod discretion. THIS IS NOT GCJ, there is no "/unrise"- furthermore anyone leaving a long & unironic/serious comment or rant (>4 lines or 6 sentences) out of character will be banned.

Taking it one step further and saying the jokes are self-aware but they're exaggerated plays on themselves.

Yes, it definitely is. I can see why my use of “hellhole” confused people... I just meant that the images are typically low-quality and purposefully offensive.

I'm sorry but I don't give a damn what incels think, even if they like some of the things I like. Doesn't ruin my own experience with them.

Same. I still like all those things referenced above, but they and how they twist pop culture just irritates the fuck out of me.

It's the CALL ME BY YOUR NAME poster!

Thanks for this, but it was actually, indeed, the Call Me By Your Name poster.

This trailer seems to be generating a lot of buzz and excitement and I think for good reason. Regardless of the movie itself, as a teaser this thing really works. Joaquin looks great, the music, the cinematography (Larry Sher really outdid himself with this one, it seems) the tagline and how that's employed here, the way the trailer kind of tells the story but also doesn't really give away much outside of what we already knew from the pre-production news about the movie. And it's just really well put-together. I love how it starts with those shots of Arthur Fleck trudging up those steps and ends with the Joker dancing down them, or the bullies taking off his green wig and not long after in the trailer we see him dying his hair green. I don't want to get too excited because, again, Todd Phillips... but this has to be one of the most effective comics-based (or comics-adjacent) trailers I have seen in a long time.

And, I mean, you got both Zazie Beetz and Brian Tyree Henry in your movie? Find cameos for Donald Glover and Lakeith Stanfield while you're at it!

Good (other) catch. The stance would be closer to the Joker poster, but in practice, I was thinking about CMBYN.

The script has leaked online and I read it. It's not a final draft (Marc Maron's character doesn't appear in it), but enough material from it is in the trailers that it seems close enough to whatever the finished product may be. It's definitely a shameless Scorsese knock-off, half Taxi Driver and half King of Comedy, but mostly it's just scene after boring scene of shit getting shoveled on this guy until he breaks, with some really confused social commentary occurring in the background. And there won't need to be any reaching to interpret this as the incel movie of the century.

The Joker has broader meme appeal than incels. He's used by left wingers to shitpost about video games too. In fact shitposting is all that he really seems to be used for these days.

I was under the impression however that, in the context of this film:
Spoiler
Athur/Joker was responsible for starting a war between the rich and poor? That doesn't sound much like incel fodder to me.

New trailer

This looks pretty fantastic, despite all of my might being used to resist it. Joaquin Phoenix is a national treasure, and I'd go to the movie theater to watch him read the phone book

And the King of Comedy vibe is even heavier in that one.

De Niro looks to be channeling what he was doing in The Comedian as well. I thought his character might have been like a Morton Downey Jr. type, but this seems to be a cross between Carson and Don Rickles.

This is getting a lot of praise from the first screening at Venice. Safe to say that gamers will rise up?

It depends on where the film's politics lie. :D The film's praise has been pretty effusive from what I can see on Twitter.

The effusive praise seems to have lasted exactly as long as the embargo; Glenn Kenny didn't like it, David Ehrlich was mixed, David Jenkins at Little White Lies despised it.

Should be interesting to see how it all goes then.

From Ehrlich's review:
David Ehrlich wrote: For better or worse, it’s exactly the movie the Joker would want.
Huh.
