At least there's a poll with 50% of the votes for Sunrise.

It is a shame that the article scuppers their main aim to give a bit more exposure to what is an extremely good film in its own right, Wings, by denigrating Sunrise.
I wonder if it would be ever be feasible to reintroduce the two categories again. Then the Academy could secure revenue and viewing figures by giving the Titanics the "Best Picture, Production" award and also try and make some edgier and more respectable choices in their "Best Picture, Unique and Artistic Production" awards? Sure, it would depend on there being enough "Unique and Artistic Productions" made each year but perhaps the category could work as an encouragement?

Tom O'Neil is an industry joke and the only reason he's even visible is that the Gold Derby is useful around Oscar season for collecting the pundits predics. This is but one in a long line of stupid remarks, though "unabashed soap opera" and "On my top 10 list of fave pix of all time are "Peggy Sue Got Married" and "Titanic" should be enough justification for most DNS servers to revoke the LA Times' web privileges until they replace him.

Every single comment on that page (including mine) rips him a new one and the poll has Sunrise as the winner by a huge margin. Kudos for the editors for not defending him and printing them all.
I'd never heard of Tom O'Neil before and I can't see him getting an invite to join the next Sight and Sound poll on this evidence...

In case you stopped following the drama, Tom O'Neil called those who disagreed with him about the merits of Sunrise "Nazis" a couple days ago. =D>

Has this gone OOP? Amazon no longer has any copies, and I can't find it listed on HMV or sendit.

Buy Murnau Borzage and let the seratonin spurt every which way.
Except for the book its just a port of the Fox material anyway, but PALified.

That's what I was going to buy anyway, just wanted to give everyone a heads up in case they didn't know.

The MoC SUNRISE was not PAL, Schreck.
That particular edition has gone OOP, but we've renewed the licence. Let the seratonin build up a while.

Ah.. my fault for presuming. I always had the old Fox disc prior to MurBorz, so I just figured.

And barely discusses WINGS, too ...
One would think the way to call deserved attention to WINGS,
might be to examine it at some length ...

Does this mean Sunrise will reappear with different/supplemented extras and new packaging, Nick? I imagine it would be hard to improve on the first MoC edition.

Could it be that MoC have licensed the Fox Murzage material? You never know, although the BFI are releasing "Seventh Heaven" and "Lucky Star", so perhaps not.

Might well be, especially as there was rather unspecific talk about "more Murnau" coming from MoC. Apart from "Phantom" (announced for ages), this might well mean "City Girl" and indeed a two-disc/BluRay version of "Sunrise" including the Czech print. Of the Borzages, "Street Angel" would be an obvious choice, perhaps "Liliom", too. The other Borzages in the set, good as they are, would be very difficult to market on their own, I suppose.

Hi everyone!
Out of curiosity and longing for silent films on Blu-ray I recently asked Eureka via e-mail, if they are planning a silent film on Blu-ray within the MoC series in the near future.
This is the answer I recieved:
The only silent film this year will be SUNRISE.

Perhaps this will solve the mystery of the missing MoC BD spine #1. Sign me up.
(And please continue to ensure the extras will work in any BD player. Thanks.)

Including Kent Jones, that well-known champion of Best Picture winners over any other kind of celluloid concoction.

"Sunrise" on Blu-ray would be a landmark release as the first full-length silent film on Blu-ray Disc. I think the only other silent movie on Blu-ray so war is short propaganda film "The Story of Petroleum" which is an additional feature on "There Will Be Blood" release.

Twitter Action here:
mastersofcinema: In Sept, a new edition of SUNRISE with a newly-found Czech print of the film, utilising different shots. Both versions in HD on the Blu-ray!
