A la carte is a great idea, but they are adding VERY few new titles of late (where's something obvious, like the Ophuls UK dvds, for instance?), and those few are always checked out. Good luck getting the new Mizoguchis or MoC's Faust. This, and the fact that they just dumped tons of used dvds on ebay, leads me to suspect things are not well at Nicheflix.

right, well, from what i've gathered, they only buy new releases in spurts (to save on shipping). In fact, I was hoping they were going to add Dviza Vertov's Entuziam from Germany, but they were waiting to add enough titles to make it worthwhile, and I eventually just went ahead and bought it.
Looking over the titles at eBay, they seem to be ones that are more "popular" titles, I'm assuming (and I could be way off) but perhaps they're selling off most of the copies of things that have already been heavily rented (in fact, the only ones they're selling i'd buy are ones that i've already rented from them back when i had a standard subscription), so perhaps they decided "well, as far as A La Carte goes...we dont NEED x amount of (x title), so we can sell the others off"

Ha, I feel kinda dirty in that I feel like I'm shilling out for them, but its OK because I really do enjoy the service, and as much as it does suck to have to wait 3 weeks to be able to rent their newest titles, its better than dropping $80 for them (and having to wait a week for shipping!) when I REALLY need to cut back on my dvd spending.

Well, the other reason they are selling a lot of that stuff is because many have now seen the light of day in region 1. In fact, I think that's a major financial hurdle for any company that specializes in renting multi-region imports... as soon as an R1 is announced, the former import has the distinct possibility of becoming near worthless.

Dang it! I was hoping they could turn things around and return to new acquisitions.

Is there ANY other rent by mail source for R2 stuff in the US?

Rental items can be ordered from Niche Flix at this point, but I'm not sure if they're completely "back." The owner is reportedly in preliminary talks with someone to continue running the business.
