Any reason (or problem) in particular that the BD has taken so long to produce - beyond just, you know, making it awesome and all?

The only reason this hasn't been out sooner is because we've been working very hard on all the other things we've released in the meantime. We're sorry it's taken so long.

FWIW, the DVD edition is officially going out-of-print. Blu-ray only in the near future.

I believe the DVD edition will be going out of print when the stock runs out. It won't go OOP right away, it just won't be repressed when it does run out. Not sure when that might be.

A little inversion on the title, there - original french with an english subtitle. I like and always prefer this.

Unfortunately, Argos Films have specifically asked us to region encode the Blu-ray. Please write to them to complain, not us. Thanks.

The whole "region coding protects territories" myth is a tough nut to crack. We'll be talking to as many licencees as possible to work out a way forward. For example, the French licencee MK2 don't region encode their releases.
We've found that licensors are happy with whatever the licencees are happy with collectively. If licencees complain, the licensor steps in and points to the contract.
At the moment, it's Kino who are suggesting we all region encode. Despite them releasing THE GENERAL on BD without region coding. So, with all respect to them, they've opted for a hypocritical "whatever suits Kino" approach to BD region encoding - which obviously looks ridiculous.

Well they want to region encode Metropolis as they damn well know that there are many people who'd rather have the MoC release than the Kino release.

Yeh, I was agreeing with you. They released The General region-free as theirs was the only release and they wanted to take advantage of being able to export it. Now they're faced with competition on Metropolis they want protect their market as they know that people will be interested in buying the MoC instead.

I'd get an MoC General in an instant, especially if you went for the black & white version as opposed to the tinted versions. The MoC BD features a new HD transfer carried out in 2009. Neither of the two DVD versions you mention utilised this particular transfer (as they came out in 2007). We're about to announce the spec of the BD.

La Planète sauvage (aka Fantastic Planet) - René Laloux's mesmerising psychedelic sci-fi animated feature won the Grand Prix at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival and is a landmark of European animation. Based on Stefan Wul's novel Oms en série [Oms by the dozen], Laloux's breathtaking vision was released in France as La Planète sauvage [The Savage Planet]; in the USA as Fantastic Planet; and immediately drew comparisons to Swift's Gulliver's Travels and Planet of the Apes (both the 1968 film and Boule's 1963 novel). Today, the film can be seen to prefigure much of the work of Hayao Miyazaki at Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away) due to its palpable political and social concerns, cultivated imagination, and memorable animation techniques.
