Again, very little on the R1 front (except maybe a third Svankmajer shorts collection and the Aussie western, The Proposition).

There is some more good upcoming stuff Down Under: Branagh's Henry V remastered; some recent Rivette; and a new La Règle du jeu.

From the UK comes a new release of Kusturica's Underground and Rian Johnson's indie Brick, plus Tartan is re-releasing Wong Kar-Wai's As Tears Go By and Days of Being Wild with the original Cantonese soundtracks (if you recall, they released these back in June with Mandarin tracks only).

Warner-Spain is releasing Carlos Saura's ¡Ay, Carmela!, one of the biggest winners in the history of the Spanish Goya Awards. Street date is August 29 (and the disc will come with both French and English subtitles).

Also on the same day Warner is releasing Antonio Drove's La Verdad Sobre el Caso Savolta (1980); Jaime Chavarri's Las Cosas de Querer (1989); Carlos Saura's EL DORADO; Vincente Aranda's El Amante Bilingue (starring Ornela Mutti); Fernando Trueba's El Ano De Las Luces; Fernando Trueba's Se Infiel y no Mires con Quien; ...ALL of these titles part of Warner-Spain's new line CINEMA ESPANOL (all with English subs, some German, French and Portuguese).

Supposedly, there is a 150-minute version of Les Valseuses that was restored in 1999, but Depardieu prevented it from beeing shown at a gala event in Paris. Bootlegs are out there, but I haven't located one yet.

Hong Kong R3 distributor IVL have announced a DVD series of the classic films of Kadokawa/Daiei. Among their upcoming releases are a trio of Masumura discs in October, being

Thanks for pointing that out. Surprised I didn't catch that. Looks like the list was too long, so I've had to delete the releases from the past four weeks. Should be complete now.

It appears that the size of my posts will be a continuing problem...

My full database (now up to 1000 titles dating to the first of the year) is organized in an MS Access file. Eventually, I plan to host some separate webpages containing tables sorted in different ways that people can download or print out, and also allow download of the updated Access file. So instead of having to format these lists as I do now, I will just provide links to easy-to-create tables.

Does anyone know if the R4 Videodrome release will just be a duplicate of the old featureless disc? I'm guessing it will be (or have less on there than the Criterion version) but would still like confirmation. That Buster Keaton set means I'm going to have a duplicate copy of The General in a couple of months....

I'm guessing Videodrome R4 is nothing new, although the cover may be updated to include the new OFLC rating.

Sorry that there was no update last week--I'm in the process of moving from Seattle to Portland, OR, so I hope to update things by August 25th--sooner if possible.

Rivers & Tides - Special Collectors Edition (2 disc)

Son of the General Trilogy / Janggunui adeul I, II, III (Im Kwon-taek / 1990/91/92) [Taeheung / R0 NTSC / S. Korea] is being releasd for the first time with English subs. The first installment in the series was released last year as a preliminary entry in the Im Kwon-taek collection but this new release includes trailers for all three films, audio commentaries by Im, interviews with the cast, and an original featurette on action choreography.

After an exhausting move from Seattle to Portland, I find myself working 12-hour days (not counting the commute). In the past four weeks my free time has gone from abundant to non-existent (I haven't had the time to watch a single DVD). I have had no time to surf and read forums and scan foreign websites looking for obscure DVD release information (all things I greatly enjoy), let alone keep my databases current.

Therefore, I am soliciting an energetic, obsessive-compulsive volunteer to take over the list. My approach to the list was perhaps too ambitious and time-consuming, but my successor is welcome to take a different tack, so long as it preserves the list's original intent (see post #1). Ideally, an update should be posted weekly.

If there is more than one 'qualified' volunteer, I'll make a choice based on some irrelevant, hypocritical, or inexplicable Criterion (naked pics are encouraged).
