Re: Derek Jarman

As requested on the Raro Video thread, I'm posting an extract from an interview/audience Q&A I conducted on 9 May 1986 in London with Derek Jarman. Concerning the filming of Sebastiane, Derek Jarman said:
There was a sense of liberation on the set which actually led to a lot of problems. Ken Hicks - playing one of the two young men who made love in the water - was desperate when it came to this he should have a hard-on. But he didn't fancy the person I'd chosen as his film friend. However, there was someone on the set he really did fancy, so he said, "He'll have to come in and we'll just do it, but it's very difficult with all these people watching." So I told everyone to go away and it led to the most almighty row. "You're making pornography, Derek - this is no longer art. It's disgusting to have someone in to give Ken a blow-job. We came down here to make an art film." They all left me, really shouting at me - I had a total revolution on my hands. Eventually they all came back and we had a right argy-bargy on the seashore about what should be done. A lot of the boys involved in it were straight and thought it was all over the edge. We were in a quiet backwater of Sardinia which had suddenly been invaded by this completely mad camera crew! We left in the hard-on during editing and the censor unknowingly passed it because it was at the bottom of the screen and we showed it to him in the wrong screen ratio. When we showed it at the right screen ratio in one or two cinemas, people said, "This is the first time anything like this has been seen on the screen!"

Sebastiane, German release

My quest is over at long last - I finally found an uncensored version of this classic, here. And, to boot, I've never seen a better-looking disc of this title. Color saturation, contrast levels and detail are outstanding. It is obviously transferred from a pristine print. If you want to see Ken Hick's semi-erection in full, you'll have to employ the "dot by dot"(or whatever your set's manufacturer may call it) option that may be accessible thru your HD TV's remote control. Removable English subtitles are available, too.
