What is the main difference between the R1 and the R2 editions of Britannia Hospital?

The R1 from Anchor Bay is anamorphic and has an interview with McDowell. I can't find much info on the UK edition (Cinema Club), but the Australian edition (Universal via Studio Canal) is also anamorphic, but it does not have the interview. Cinema Club sometimes distributes Studio Canal. I don't have any of these editions, but I might go for the R1. DVD Savant review. Graham Crowden as Professor Millar gives one of the greatest monologues in all of Cinema in this one, btw.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but Paramount [UK] are releasing a bare bones R2 version of IF one week before Criterion. Amazon has the date as June 11. I'm not sure if the transfer will be 4:3 or (a cropped) 16:9. [Remember the recent R2 of GO-BETWEEN that was put out as pan-and-scan 4:3.]

The Go-Between came from Optimum, and I can't remember Paramount screwing a release up to badly as to give us it in the wrong AR. Bare bones BTW? Do you know that for a fact?

Zeta Minor says: Paramount has announced that they're releasing Lindsay Anderson's if... on DVD on June the 11th. It will be a single-disc set, and all other details are TBA, except that it will come "with a realm of extras" (perhaps enough to rival the American two-disc release from Criterion, which is also due in June).

Details of the UK release (it's very likely the commentary will be on there - it's not necessary for distributors to submit them to the BBFC unless they think it'll alter the certificate of the overall disc). So the deal with Criterion seems to be rather like that of Disney - they can handle the R1 release, as long as Paramount can use the same special features elsewhere.

DVD Times have the full specs up & the commentary is there as well as the anamorphic 1.66:1 transfer.

The date is changed to July 23.

I agree with david. It has been a long time since I last saw it, but I seem to remember him perched on the roof of the school with a machine gun as all the robed schoolmasters are running for cover below! I found it very funny at the time (I found the earlier caning sequence more disturbing), but then I've always had a sick sense of humour!

Why wouldn't Criterion include optional English subs? Some Britts are a little hard to understand sometimes, thats like not have subs on Withnail & I.

Check Beaver's screencaps again - the subs are on there.

There are no difficult regional accents in If..., since it's set in a boarding school where everyone (as far as I recall) comes close to received pronunciation.

No Geordies or Glaswegians, although the young boy Biles (victim of a toilet head-flushing) is played by a Scottish actor who would grow up to feature in the Scottish sitcom Rab C. Nesbitt, which really would require subtitles (irrelevant trivia fact for the day).

Thanks for the heads up on the accents. I guess I was thinking about Scottish accents actually cause the first film that came to mind when reading that was Ratcatcher, I just put down Withnail to make the Brittish comparison.

I am surprised Criterion let such a glaring error slip through in Ehrenstein's essay in the booklet. He refers to the "Columbine massacre of 1991."

Doesn't the re release of If... bring up the logical question of a release of "Zero for Conduct"?

Is a print of that film available? Has it ever been released.

Seems it's more a legend than a film.

That has been screening somewheres with a new print, I believe. Criterion should bring it out eventually.
