There's been quite a few Naruse movies on the 'Nihon Eiga Senmon Channel' recently here in Japan. I seem to recall that a few of them were advertised as being not yet on video/DVD.
I don't have last month's schedule to hand but of the 6 Naruse films on this month and in December 'Natsukashi no Kao' from 1941 and 'Circus gonin-gumi' from 1935 are labeled as such.
I guess this might be some indication of forthcoming releases? Or perhaps just of their poor quality...

Suzuki Masayuki's Hero is now listed on
yesasia.com with english subtitles for March 8th. Anybody seen this? Is it entertaining? Mediocre?
edit: I'd originally gotten Suzuki Masayuki and Suo Masayuki confused but fixed it thanks to manicsounds correction

First of all, this is NOT a Masayuki Suo film. He would not succumb to this...
HERO is directed by Masayuki Suzuki, who is pretty much a gun for hire.

Thanks for the correction, I guess I wasn't paying attention (and all that work looking for database listings.)

Great news! I hope more subbed Kawase will follow. This will be the first film of hers to be released with (official) English subs, no?

On 4/26, Kinokuniya will release a 5-disc box entitled Kawase Naomi - Early Documentaries. According to
Kawase's blog, half of the 8 films included in the box have never had an official release in theaters. Here are the titles:
Ni Tsutsumarete (Embracing - 1992)
Katatsumori (1994)
Ten, Mitake (See the Heavens - 1995)
Hi wa Katabuki (The Setting Sun - 1996)
Somaudo Monogatari (The Weald - 1998)
Manguekyo (1999)
Kyakarabaa (Sky, Wind, Fire, Water, Earth - 2001)
Tsuioku no Dansu (Letter from a Yellow Cherry Blossom - 2003)
Several sites are listing this set as having English subtitles.

The
YesAsia listing appears to confirm this. Not a cheap release, but the film is superb and well worth it. Hopefully more subbed Kawase will follow.

Although most sites are listing the documentary box set as having English subtitles, in the list on Naomi Kawase's
website only one (Manguekyo) is labelled as "
English Subtitled Version".
Edit: I sent an email to the address on her page and got a reply today. All documentaries have english subtitles. There are some interviews and things which won't have english subs however.

I just ordered the Kawase set, so when I get it I'll post some screencaps and things. A very, very, very exciting release.

Not sure where to put this, and it probably doesn't belong even in the International DVD section but the mastersofcinema.org site has this piece of news dated yesterday from Doug Cummings:
Variety Asia is reporting that the famed Shochiku studio (Japan) will debut an online streaming service on May 21: "Users will be able to view one pic for seven days for ¥367 ($3.54) or take out a monthly subscription for $10.14. Shochiku will launch the service with 100 pics, including classics from auteurs Yasujiro Ozu and Keisuke Kinoshita... It will add 10-20 titles monthly and will be streaming 200 titles by the end of its first year." - D.C.
Ball at the Anjo House (Kozaburo Yoshimura, 1947)

CD Japan shows that Ball at the Anjo House(1947) by Kozaburo Yoshimura will be available on 6/27/08 for a limited time until 12/31/08. No english subs.

Shochiku is releasing 24 classic titles on 6/27 - while most are re-releases, three important first time to DVD titles include the title listed above and:
Honjitsu kyushin [aka
No Consultations Today] (1951, Shibuya Minoru) and
Tonari no Yaechan [aka
Our Neighbor, Miss Yae] (1934, Shimazu Yasujiro). With the exception of the Shimizu set, it appears that none of the other Shochiku releases will have English subs.

Thanks for the heads up about the classic titles, htdm! I also see that Shochiku is putting Yoshimura Kouzaburo's Shindo scripted
Ball At the Anjo House, a certain classic starring Hara Setsuko and Mori Masayuki. I saw this film at the Shochiku retrospective a few years back in NY and it was one of many pleasant surprises.
Ghibli Blu-ray

Jarinko Chie seems to be the first classic Studio Ghibli to be released on Blu-ray (no Iblard Jikan doesn't count). A somewhat odd choice to start out with, is it
that popular also outside of the Kansai area? Wonderful film nevertheless, hopefully the rest of them will follow soon.

Still no English subtitling for this one. Very unfortunate, because this depends more on talking to a considerable extent (and talking in Osaka dialect at that).

Great find, feckless boy. Apparently
this site has some english subs, which could be used.

It is supposedly translated from and synched to the french release (Kié la petite peste). The forthcoming Blu-ray isn't listed to have any subtitles at all which is strange since it might be tricky even for native japanese speakers to keep up with the Osaka-ben spoken (if you want to get an idea just watch The Pornographers).

Just got
Tonari no Yaechan [aka
Our Neighbor, Miss Yae] (1934, Shimazu Yasujiro) today - looks much better than the official Shochiku Home Video release of several years ago - and no English subs as expected.

Lucky you -- I won't have my copies of this batch of Shochiku releases until Monday (or so).
I wonder if they have other classics like Yae-chan and Anjo House in the pipeline?

According to
Yesasia's pre-release calender are Itami Juzo's films (Tampopo, The Funeral etc) going to be re-released at a lower price point (around $22). They'll probably have English subtitles (to be confirmed).
Oshima box-set

Yet another Oshima Nagisa
box-set is set to be released on November 29. A three disk affair:
The Catch (1961),
Tales of the Ninja (1967) and
Death by Hanging (1968). Two relatively obscure titles coupled with a masterpiece (Death by Hanging). No english subs as far as I can see (but then again my kanji skills are on the level of a three year old).
