I would wait on The Stranger. It isn't that important. I have the region 2 German edition.patrick wrote:So is the Stranger worthy of making time to watch it when there are a million other things I should be doing? The new MGM disc showed up at the store today, and I suppose I could always have it on while I clean and unpack...
I wonder if the transfer is better than the German one. I am not interested in buying this version unless the dvd is better.

I don't want to get anyone's hopes up too much, but I have heard a rumor from a fairly reliable source that the discs will be new 16 x 9 transfers and NOT a recyle of the old discs. Best to wait until there's a review in before getting too optimistic.Gigi M. wrote:DavisDVD is reporting that the upcoming disc of Jean de Florette/Manon of the spring is a double feature recycling the previous non-anamorphic transfer. This is just to much from MGM.

We got it in at the shop, I'll take a look at it sometime soon.Has anyone taken a chance on the Manon Of The Spring / Jean De Florette reissue? I'm sure that we'd all love to hear that the transfers are in gorgeous 2.35:1 anamorphic. I have the feeling that no online reviews will appear and that we're on our own.

It seems I deleted my previous message regarding Jean de Florette/Manon of the Spring. No worries, as I may have been overly enthusiastic about this reissue. The good news is it is anamorphic and it does appear better than the previous release. But, truthfully, it's been a while since I viewed that piece of shit. I'll let someone with a better technical eye take a go at it.

Ralph Jenkins at HTF posted some screencaps of Manon:

Fucking dumbfuck MGM. This still doesn't look right - blown-out, too reddish/yellowish and it lacks detail, unlike the Pathe, which has substantially more cropping. What a never-ending nightmare.

Comparison of the Prism UK and French transfers of Witchfinder.
Mein Gott, the UK transfer is terrible. The Metrodome edition isn't as bad as that, as I recall, but the French transfer is still far superior to it, too. I would be delighted if the MGM transfer is as good as this. The French DVD release is based on a MGM print of the complete Director's Cut.

To be fair, the UK release had to rely on videotape for the reinserted footage, so the last two shots aren't representative of the majority of the film. Nevertheless, the French disc would appear to be far superior, and if the MGM is as good, I'll be replacing my UK disc. I didn't know that additional "violent" footage existed in any kind of quality state.

Which reminds me, I still need to get that SE of The King and I.

Merry May!
I was in a fairly crowded library when I read the news about Man of the West and I let out an uncontrollable gasp. It would have been nice if Criterion had gotten it, but I've been waiting for this one so long I'm glad just to be able to get it on DVD.

Nice. I believe that he always supervises transfers, but it is good to get confirmation. How did you come by this info, btw? An official announcement for the pretty-much-comfirmed SE of Sorceror from Universal would be great.Jameson281 wrote:Friedkin supervised and approved the new transfer, but I don't believe there are any extras on the disc.Person wrote:The Night They Raided Minsky's has been a-long time coming. I have friends in MGM's technical department. From what I heard, Friedkin was easy to work with and generally satisfied with MGM's initial pass on the transfer, only requesting a couple of changes.Person wrote:Nice.
