So is the Stranger worthy of making time to watch it when there are a million other things I should be doing? The new MGM disc showed up at the store today, and I suppose I could always have it on while I clean and unpack...

I would wait on The Stranger. It isn't that important. I have the region 2 German edition.

I wonder if the transfer is better than the German one. I am not interested in buying this version unless the dvd is better.

I don't want to get anyone's hopes up too much, but I have heard a rumor from a fairly reliable source that the discs will be new 16 x 9 transfers and NOT a recyle of the old discs. Best to wait until there's a review in before getting too optimistic.

How did I miss that MGM finally released Stone Cold awhile back? This film is by far the most ludicrous action movie ever made, and that's saying something. It's like Roadhouse times Cobra times a million.

Has anyone taken a chance on the Manon Of The Spring / Jean De Florette reissue? I'm sure that we'd all love to hear that the transfers are in gorgeous 2.35:1 anamorphic. I have the feeling that no online reviews will appear and that we're on our own.

FWIW, the box makes no mention of an anamorphic transfer for either.

We got it in at the shop, I'll take a look at it sometime soon.

It seems I deleted my previous message regarding Jean de Florette/Manon of the Spring. No worries, as I may have been overly enthusiastic about this reissue. The good news is it is anamorphic and it does appear better than the previous release. But, truthfully, it's been a while since I viewed that piece of shit. I'll let someone with a better technical eye take a go at it.

Ralph Jenkins at HTF posted some screencaps of Manon:

1 - 2 - 3 - 4

Fucking dumbfuck MGM. This still doesn't look right - blown-out, too reddish/yellowish and it lacks detail, unlike the Pathe, which has substantially more cropping. What a never-ending nightmare.

Anyone know any more about the differences between the old release of Zhang Yimou's 'To Live' vs. the new one? It appears that the new release has a running time 125 minutes vs. the old release's 133 minutes. Can anyone confirm?

Comparison of the Prism UK and French transfers of Witchfinder.
The French DVD release is based on a MGM print of the complete Director's Cut.
Mein Gott, the UK transfer is terrible. The Metrodome edition isn't as bad as that, as I recall, but the French transfer is still far superior to it, too. I would be delighted if the MGM transfer is as good as this.

To be fair, the UK release had to rely on videotape for the reinserted footage, so the last two shots aren't representative of the majority of the film. Nevertheless, the French disc would appear to be far superior, and if the MGM is as good, I'll be replacing my UK disc. I didn't know that additional "violent" footage existed in any kind of quality state.

tryavna, I take it that your UK edition is not the Metrodome which has the excellent doc on Michael Reeves? I am holding onto my UK disc. I need to get some double-disc Alpha cases, though, as I've used up loads this year due to double-dipping!

Ah, I had forgotten about that extra. Guess I'll be holding onto it after all.

DVD Savant is reporting that a bunch of notable MGM titles are coming in May, including Man of the West, Day of the Outlaw, The Night They Raided Minsky's, Navajo Joe, The Secret Invasion, and more...

The Night They Raided Minsky's has been a-long time coming. Hopefully, it has a Friedkin commentary.

Great to see that Day of the Outlaw is finally on the way. Beautifully photographed film.

Friedkin supervised and approved the new transfer, but I don't believe there are any extras on the disc.

Man of the West! Finally! Between this and The Furies what a couple of great months for Mann fans.

Merry May!

I was in a fairly crowded library when I read the news about Man of the West and I let out an uncontrollable gasp. It would have been nice if Criterion had gotten it, but I've been waiting for this one so long I'm glad just to be able to get it on DVD.

Nice. I believe that he always supervises transfers, but it is good to get confirmation. How did you come by this info, btw? An official announcement for the pretty-much-comfirmed SE of Sorceror from Universal would be great.

I have friends in MGM's technical department. From what I heard, Friedkin was easy to work with and generally satisfied with MGM's initial pass on the transfer, only requesting a couple of changes.
